I've seen a lot worse....this cover is a movie poster; a cover for a graphic novel. It's pretty obvious they're telling a story in one image with this art. Not too bad at all...the art is fine...comic book-ish....it just doesn't fit the preconceived notion of Within Temptation being a gothic/metal band.
I have to agree. It may not be the type of album cover that people have come to expect from WT, but it's not that horrible to look at. I've definitely seen way worse artwork.
/end-of-thread encountered.
Exactly. What I think is sad is that a discussion on the new artwork of this album had gotten more attention than the thread about the release of the album's first single did:

I actually thought the new single was pretty good, assuming you were a fan of the last Within Temptation album (which I know a lot of folks on here weren't). The band is still making great music IMO and that's the important thing. Lots of bands have one (or a few) album(s) where you look at the cover and scratch your head because it doesn't look like what you normally expect from that band, but the important thing is (or should be) that the quality of music is still there.
Of course at this point everyone is more busy arguing about what other album covers are worse looking than WT's new one, so that's probably why this thread seems to have gotten so much more discussion than the thread on the release of WT's new single did.
I don't like it. But then again, I'm not the fan base WT cares about. They are now all about commercial success, so they don't care for people like me who think their first couple of albums are their best.
Most smart bands do think about commercial success, especially if they want to keep making music. I would imagine Within Temptation wants to continue making albums that will keep their original fan base interested as well as continuing to grow their fan base. No bands wants to loose fans. As we all know, you can't please everybody all the time, especially not in metal.
I love the first few WT albums, but I also loved The Heart of Everything and think that The Silent Force is certainly one of if not the best WT album. We can't expect the band to want to remain stagnate and never grow or do anything beyond their original sound or style. And yes, the reality is that along the way their choices may cause them to gain some new fans and loose some old fans.
Writing an album based around a comic book is certainly somewhat of a marketing tactic for WT, but all bands are trying new things to keep their fans interested (and to generate more capital to continue making music - a comic book is another item to sell and another way to get the bands name out to people who may not have heard them previously). Just because the album artwork isn't more like the band's prior album covers, or the album is based around the idea of a "gimmick" or trying something new, that doesn't mean that the album's music can't be any good.
