It's not just making great covers. It's part of the band.
Imo, letting someone else do the covers would be like asking someone from outside the band to write the lyrics.

Exactly. Niklas has been doing this for years, and its one of his contribution to every new album. The only good reason to get somebody else to do it would be if Niklas had a car accident and had both his hands amputated...

@Siren: well, what if anyone in the band cannot write decent lyrics? Now I dont mean DT of course, but any band. I write lyrics for my friends who are in a death metal band, but none of them can do it. But, I am practically a non-playing member of the band, so I dont know if that counts.

@Marduk: well, then you should be considered a member of the band or at least given full credit for the lyrics. the point is that if the band can do it themselves, that's the best thing. if they can't and they need someone else, then imo that should be like a member of the band who knows what the rest of the band wants and likes. not a different person writing lyrics for each album just for variation.
