Write a DT-forum-song!

Well, there is no deadline, but after tonight, I won't be able to record until Monday night at the earliest, which is why I wanted to make progress on my part.

@tri: I haven't really been following that, simply because it'd be pretty crazy to try and time how long LBRH is going to take to do the alternating lines. Instead I've been just recording the whole thing, figuring we could drop my lines and add his wherever we wanted with greater ease.

I did record one full run through last night before I went to sleep, but I'm not too happy with it - I'll probably send it to KC and tri tonight sometime though, just to hear it.

That would be great, but send it to LBRH as well.. I think the chorus would be really cool if you did

LBRHWe are at the threshold of pain,
KOVThe locked, the maimed,
LBRHThe Haggis, The Rubbish, with the madness around us
KOVWe stare.(LBRH:Staaaaare!!)

One other thing. 6sf want to hear it to so he know where to put the solo in... hehehe

Ok...I'ms sitting at home playing a bit with my voise track. How's some reverse singing? It sounds cool... KC... I need your mailadress or something so I can send you the shit... nothing meant against yoiour song then, cause I like it..

Ok, well my voice is feeling much better now. I won't be able to record until Sunday or Monday night (most likely Monday), so I'll rest up. I had my brother listen to what I did, and he noticed that there was a low hiss from the mic that was causing it to sound like I was whispering. I'm not quite sure how to filter that out, which sucks. I'm gonna look into buying an actual mic instead of using my gaming headset :p

Oh damn, this is harder than I thought. After hours of staring at the tab KC gave to me, now I'm chewing down the immense wiki page on tonality just to get an idea on composing the solo. Any help from you professionals would be very much appreciated.

@KC: I noticed the change from C# minor to F# melodic minor and a third change of which I'm not sure. What effect do these changes have on how the song feels in parts? And how are they used?

perhaps something like a recording without the drums but click instead?

Not sure if this got unnoticed or.. but I can impossibly do anything without it. :erk:

@6FS, how long have you been playing guitar? :)

Well to be honest Modulations are something I've just learned to throw in for all the reasons any composer would throw in a modulation. I guess those reasons are: for some variety, to make that certain part of the song stand out harmonically through the tonal contrast and because it just sounds more epic to step the tonality up (and then if done correctly, nice and dark to drag it back down). Dark Tranquillity achieve these things in much more subtle ways though... such as in little bridge sections (around the gallery era) they'll modulate during one of the bachish (maybe not the best way to describe it) sounding guitar parts. Now-a-days the modulations seem more stunning, and appear more frequently when the keyboard sections are driving the music. The rather comic keyboard section I threw in does this. As for choosing the key specifically, it was done by ear and not by theory. although the theory can be applied, I chose the best part of the neck to play the parts on. I think talking in frets the modulations are an augmented 4th/perfect 5th, which is pretty much all that happens in melodic deathmetal. This may vaguely answer your question. But then bare in mind I don't think anything in the song is intelligent musically. It's all parodyish and unoriginal riffs that I slapped together in a free afternoon.

My email address is feast_of_burden(at)hotmail(dot)com ... send me an email if you want the tab. It's not fully accurate to how I ended up playing it (doesn't have some of the lead sections etc). Also if you want to send me your additions I'll be glad to accept them :D.

A little bit over 2 years. And I haven't received any musical training but from my friend. So, yeah, I have rather poor ears.

@KC: thanks, that clears things up for me. What you can do in a free afternoon is better than what I can do in 5 free afternoons. :D

I did 6 years of music classes, played clarinet and piano in a music school, and now I play the guitar, but still I am prety bad at playing something by ear, and I cant improvise good, exept on the pentatonic scales ....
But I have to say that when I started music classes I sang very badly out of tune, and now i can sing in tune... I have always felt like i somehow came to play music by a random way, more than actually having some talent or predispositions for it... i started to play music when my youger brother started to learn how to play piano when he was 5...

KC: Did I send you my stuff? I have probably asked you two times allready, but I'm a bit tired so I do not remember....

Oh... I recorded a new one today. Made some reverse stuff and a classical abba-maneuver. You know... The classical put two on top of eachother effect.

You can hear it tomorrow... Right now I'm at my mother's.

No, not harmonising. I did one with a really low harmony in the beginning, but then I change it to the ABBA-thing. Thing they did was putting the same sample on top of eachother to make it sound more.........to fill it up a bit.... You can hear the one with the harmonies too though....
