NFU: Hmm...given a few modifications on the Prog Metal definition, we could come up with a definition of Prog music...
Reading most of the posts, I'm able to narrow it down to several words that capture the very essence of what is Prog music: Dynamic, robust, experimentation. Prog has always taken its pride in being in a constant state of flux...never staying stagant for even a second. Be it folksy prog, prog metal or prog death, prog music always centers on the need to explore musical boundaries to create music that is sublime and enjoyable at the same time.

After hearing Opeth for the first time last year, I have wanted to explore the progressive side of music a little bit more, but I have never really found a way of getting some things I should check out. Thanks guys for giving me some recommendations threads. I don't like to make recommendation threads here because usually if you browse through the UM threads on this site enough there are already always some good ones. I never really knew how define progressive rock, but you guys gave me some light.

Prog = Any kind of music that will cause endless debates and no two people will ever be satisfied with the definition, even if they agree on some points.

I do agree that there are times where prog became its exact antithesis and stagnated. As to what brought about those events, there are a lot of factors. But AFAIK, when people cease to explore what they could do with their instruments, stick to what(in their eyes at least) is "tried-and-true", and lose the desire to explore, that'd be the death of any kind of music.
