I started looking at a bunch of them today cause I know I'll want to upgrade from my dumpy Toneport soon and I thought we could get a thread going of the pros and cons of the interfaces all of you use and what you like best. Whether it be for multiple inputs, preamp or none, over $1,000 or under $250, whatever!

There is a TON of information about interfaces if you search here/google/gearslutz, but I still think this is a great topic idea. If you've got personal experience with more than one interface, share simple pros, cons, and opinions. I did a quick search and there's nothing like that.

M-Audio Delta 1010

Pros: recorded an album at a surprisingly high quality (along with an FMR RNP) with very little cash invested. When it broke I was able to fix it myself.

Cons: driver instabilities (especially while using midi in/out). I had to replace all the capacitors at one point due to some "known issue" that wasn't covered under a warranty (0db-ish noise at every input).

Motu 828

Pros: Very stable and frequently updated drivers. Great price. Cons: Poor quality a/d converters. Meter are inaccurate and hard to read. No midi in/out.

Fireface 400

I'll let you know when I'm able to use it, I bought it broken on eBay, it's in the shop.

Favorite between 828 and 1010: 828 because it always works

I have been using presonus FP10's for along time and have been wanting to upgrade, Problem is I typicaly record anywere from 12 to 16 tracks of drums at a time per project, and the pods allow me to do that at the cost of having poor converters and shitty pre-amps. Not trying to derail the thread but can anyone point me in the right direction on upgrading without having to buy thousands of dollars worth of pre's?

It would have to be the Saffire Pro 40 for me: Great preamps, very stable, low latency, no reamp box or di box needed and not very expensive. Need to try the Saffire 56 one day.

I love(d) my RME fireface 400, but it is broken. Now I am getting a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40, and it looks like a winner. Will use it as a ADAT expansion when my RME comes back form repair

Cant beat RME for reliablility. What kind of options are you looking on your interface? Some people want a "one-stop-shop" with pre's / headphones / etc... and some people just want AD-DA conversion.
I've always loved the old Apogee AD8000 converters. Even though they only do 44.1/48k, there sure were a lot of amazing sounding records done with them. You can get them on ebay for +/-$700 now, so pair 4 of them together with an M-Audio ProFire Lightbridge
and you'll have a kick-ass 32 I/O apogee system that can run Protools or Anything else for around $3300
