its a marketing term that was created as a joke by sub-pop and adopted by major labels and music journalists to apply to a bunch of rock bands that emerged in geographical and chronological proximity and really dont have a great deal of similarity to each other

Geographical?? Metal Church happens to be form Seattle, doesn't make them grunge. Sir Mix-A-Lot isn't grunge, he's rap.

To sum it all up, GTFO

Thank you... I will never listen to grunge (er, early 90's rock from Seattle, sorry... I'll learn) again... you have been so helpful. Please, post more pretentious crap... I sit on the edge of my seat in unbearable anticipation waiting for the next one.

The term was invented by Mark Arm from Mudhoney when he was asked in an interview what style of music he plays, and then became a buzz word for the rock bands from Seattle and the surrounding area and a lot of other music that was similar from around the same time period.

Really?? I thought grunge had a different style of rock, I don't think it's just a term for any Seattle rock band.
