I would either go with Yngwie's Rising Force, Tony Mac's Maximum Security or the Vinman's Mind's eye - three of my favorite players ever. All three albums are such amazing classics, and they all have that certain great 80's feel to them, as well as amazing compositions and over the top technique. They defineately changed guitar in the 80's and are to me the definite master pieces of neoclassical guitar.

Missing for this thread would be Greg Howe's Parallax or Introspection discs, as well as Vitalij Kuprij's High definition.

You forgot Extraction, as well as other shred albums by Frank Gambale, Bret Garsed, Shawn Lane, Allan Holdsworth ect....but hes meaning strictly metal so they don't really count.

Extraction is really really awesome, but Parallax will always be my favorite Howe album ever, the best heavy fusion album ever recorded, so I was refering to this one. I also dig Introspection and Uncertain terms a lot, as well as High Definition (Vitalij Kuprij), then most of the other Howe albums follow. I'm also a huge fan of Holdsworth (Hard hat area, Heavy Machinery) and Frank Gambale (Live), I'm not that much into Shawn Lane or Brett Garsed though - great players, but their music doesn't do that much for me - their pop rock stuff is too cheesy for me (I miss those kick ass riffs as Greg Howe has them), while their fusion stuff is often too improvised and lacks structure to my ears. Anyway, I guess it's just a matter of taste. For metal guitar, the Yngwie/Vinnie/Tony ones are untouchable, although they're not that popular in the guitar community these days.

i don't think "the extremist" is a metal album, it's more rock album.

i choose perpetual burn, but it's very close with passion and warfare.

but vai is not a typical metalhead, so i choose becker album which IMHO is the best instrumental metal album ever.
