Ödemarkens Son

I recenlty got this album, I have all releases after this one as well, and i think this album is a masterpiece. I like all them all but this one my favorite. I have no idea what the lyrics mean and it doesnt matter. Thank you Vintersorg for bringing more depth and meaning into the music i listen too.

I totally agree. I love this album even though I don't understand the Swedish lyrics. The music is so beautiful. However some of the songs are translated if you look around the forum for the threads. :)

I can't decide which album is my favorite though. It's too mind boggling to decide! o_O

As we are on the topic of Odemarkens Son, yes this album is INDEED a masterpiece. But I don't really agree, Sorath, each album has its own style and charm. I just got TFB today, and man, it has already knocked my socks off. If I HAD to choose a favorite Vintersorg release, I'd go with Cosmic Genesis.

Mr. V, I'm sorry to say that I do honestly think so, but I've only got three albums (Hedniskhjärtad, Till Fjälls and Cosmic Genesis), and I've ILLEGALLY DOWNLOADED a track from the new album that convinced me not to buy the whole thing. It may be because I can not relate in any way to the math/physics/cosmic stuff (even though I read physics B in school which means that I'm intelligent, I just don't care for that stuff) while I do indeed share your (hopefully still remaining) feelings for our nature here in Norrland. I know that many feel the same way I do (though not as many as the ones who prefer the new stuff, I suppose), I guess most just don't bother posting here at all.

I think all of Vintersorgs albums (ones i've heard) are all great in their own aspect. All depending on the angle, right? But i do tend to think that most artists are more raw (in a good way) early on in their career, then progress into a more artistic realm with each release. From listening to the latest release, there is still an edge to his music, but i think the rawness has been somewhat removed.

I agree 110% with you on that... look at like almost any band and you'll see that this is true. Take for example Dark Tranquillity. Listen to Skydancer and you'll see the music is more raw than now, but its fantastic. Take a look at Damage Done and you'll see that it has a WHOLE new artistic edge that is truly unique, and it still remains fantastic. This is exactly how I view Vintersorg.

I agree with this. I think Dark Tranquillity has done a lot of experimenting in their career and with good results. I like everything they have released. It's the same situation with Vintersorg (IMO anyway).

However I do understand those who prefer early albums in a band's career, because there's bands out there that I feel that way about too. It's just personal preference. Some people will like a band's musical evolution, while others don't. :)

I have three Vintersorg albums right now. Till Fjalls, Odemarkens Son and Cosmic Genesis and I plan on picking up the others as soon as I have the money. Although Till Fjalls was initially my favorite, Cosmic Genesis has since passed it up and I'm completely hooked on listening to it. "Astral and Arcane" alone makes that album great. I really don't put a lot of stock in the whole "earlier the better" thing as its something I haven't experienced much. I'm looking forward to picking up Visions from the Spiral Generator and The Focusing Blur as soon as I can because I think Mr. V makes some of the best music out there and judging from the way I enjoyed Cosmic Genesis, he seems to moving in the right direction.

I actually think theres more people who prefer the old stuff (just look at all polls, ödemarken is leading everywhere) and that vintersorg not doing this new style to get more fans (money, fame :loco: ). But that was probably not your point :) or??

Nope, I didn't mean that mr. V is doing what he does to get money and fame (since he's intelligent enough to know that pi doesn't sell albums like love and such does) and so on, but many do. I still prefer the earlier stuff, though.

i'm sure it probably goes down the middle road no matter how you look at it. it's a pro and con argument. vintersorg is not the type of music that will be commericially successful. one it's too complex and there's just too much going on. i refer to the newer material. the older stuff though easier to get into is not that accessible to most people and come to think of it most people wouldn't grasp the concept of scandanavian atmosphere. i personally prefer the newer stuff. it does that much more for me. i can listen to it each time and find something new about it. i like the older stuff but it doesn't sound as developed and production is not as clean. i like the modern clean sound. there's enough bands out there that sound "dirty" and unproduced. i think vintersorg sounds better and i commend him on his direction. in the end the music is his and his alone. we are all but spectators. none the less i still think once "visions" came out it was a new chapter and i can't wait for future albums. and yes i love the focusing blur much more than the older stuff.

I also agree with Sorath, just look at Ulver, Satyricon, Darkthrone, Enslaved, Dimmu Borgir, Emperor, etc...I could enlist a thousand of them
About Cosmic Genesis that so many praise, just think if it was going to have its orignal name "Natumystik", I think, as I read on the german fan page, with the lyrics that now are, I suppose, the poems on V's official page, it would be greater than OS

hum....do u really think the older albums have that bad production? I think it´s rather clean, well maybe som of the acoustic parts are kind of blurry. The majesticness is anyway gone from the newer albums, even throught its awesome melodies and structure and everything.

Growth and progression is good for a band. A band that does not grow or expand tends to get stale. I mean, look at the rock band Boston (dating myself here!!) Every album they put out sounded EXACTLY alike and that was only 3 albums! Now sometimes bands tend to change but not for the better (Sellouttica and Nu-Flames) but that is not the case for Vintersorg IMO. I enjoy the older stuff including Otyg and the newer stuff. I still don't have TFB though but I hope to take care of that soon!
