2012 Presidential election thread

Ron Paul. Seems he would be best for the middle class (aka those of us who work for a living). He's against ridiculous government spending which we get punished for and 'big government' in general. Doesn't mean I agree 100% with all of his ideas, but I don't think any of us agree 100% with any candidate.

All that being said, I'm really not a fan of politics. At the end of the day, can you really trust any of these folks? But someone up there needs to cut out the irresponsible spending and stop all the hand outs.

I agree with you on almost all points. Government spending is dangerously ridiculous. I remember when the GOP was known to advocate small, thrifty government. Funny how that changed once they grew comfy in controlling the House of Representatives. At this point where do you start trimming the fat?
A) Medicare/Health Care
B) Welfare
C) Farm Subsidies
D) Defense Spending
E) Foreign Aid
F) All of the Above
I agree with you on the handouts, especially the ones to the banks and businesses that were too big to fail.

A) Medicare/Health Care: Tort reform. Keep Medicade/care. Drop Obamacare.
B) Welfare: Kept, but with added oversights to prevent abuse.
C) Farm Subsidies: Individual farmers really aren't competitive with corporate farms. Let the subsidies lapse and assist former farmers in finding jobs and/or further education.
D) Defense Spending: Reduce our ground military to defending american soil. Keep a strong intelligence, special forces and air/sea superiority. We have entirely too large a ground force. It's not necessary. Get out out of these other countries. We need to stay ahead of terrorism and have air/sea superiority, but ground wars are a thing of the past.
E) Foreign Aid. Cut it completely except for disaster relief.

One thing lot of you are fogetting about this election is that the third parties haven't set up yet. I can see Ron Paul fans voting for the libertarian party if they want to vote for a alternative to the two party. I think most of us are in line with you Richard is because the nominations for the Republicans are horrible/unelectable.

I don't think that third parties offer a viable option/alternative within the electoral process. In fact, I'm becoming rapidly convinced that third parties actually serve to maintain the status quo.

I hear the following argument far too often to ignore: "Well, I really agree with libertarian values, but if I vote libertarian my vote will go to waste. So I'll vote republican." The logic of this statement is startling. Basically, by having libertarianism to agree with, people can alleviate a sense of guilt by saying they believe in human rights and freedoms (i.e. gay rights, abortion, etc.).

However, by voting republican, they equate the term "freedom" with economic freedom; it's happening at a profound rate in this country. The republican party claims to support "freedom" as a general and all-encompassing ideal; and yet the definition of freedom that is proposed by the logic of the republican party is strictly economic. This is because the majority of people who vote republican fall into the category of straight white traditional families; they take "basic human rights" for granted because their particular style of living is the same that is dictated by the American cultural hegemony. In truth, they would care about these rights if they were forced to experience an existence in which they lacked them; but the ideology of the United States allows a vast majority to live comfortably while actually under tyranny.

I think third parties do nothing to advance our society because they create the illusion of choice.

I would drop Obamacare and start a single payer health care system. It's the way to go. I would cut miltary spending. Keep social security/medicare and moderate on foreign aid. Stop giving bailouts to banks and businesses.

Rich people and poor work too.

Ron Paul has batshit views on many political topics. You should research him Jimmy.

]

First of all I do research him, your link is nothing new to me. 2nd, Who the fuck agrees with any candidate 100% I'm pro choice but fuck many people I know are life. It's a complex issue.

and what the fuck are you talking about "batshit views"

Can you be more specific. All you do is parrot and relay bullshit without a valid opinion. Please, seriously, tell what views YOU think are batshit and why?

The reason that I didn't think it was him was because I remember him mentioning something a while back about reading some political philosophy. I always thought Randy Moss had the reading level of a five year old, so I never made that connection.

politics in general just scare the shit out of me. I know it's not, but it feels like every year it gets worse and worse in terms of how selfish and downright fucking despicable our politicians are. not attempting to come to an agreement on things so they can make others look bad, putting into place horrible laws that take away rights, promoting laws and positive methods for the hugely rich to control everything, never putting the good of the country ahead of themselves and their job etc. our political system and the people in it are supposed to essentially be representatives trying to make a successful, functioning country that takes care of it's people and keeps them safe, yet instead they all look out for the interests of themselves, their political party, and the people in power or lining their pockets. this whole thing with the debt ceiling is just ridiculous and more and more these insane media corporations and politicians are just bending to the whim of the extremely rich or whoever is powerful at the time, and shit like screwing with social security/medicare and other things that help society just to avoid raising taxes is freaky. i know it's all broken record stuff but fuck, just watching the news makes me sick and i can't even turn on channels like fox or any other stations that are extremely biased and pushing agenda while claiming to be news.

I doubt I'll be voting either because everyone seems batshit insane, insincere or just flat out retarded. the fact that people like palin and the other woman can run for president when they don't have any fucking brains is outrageous.

Well, that claim was probably a lie. He also claimed to have read all of Marx's Das Kapital in one day.

I am well knowledgeable reader of political philosophy that everyone thinks I'm some troll. I just have so much shit dealing in my life that I couldn't reset. I have read Das Kapital but I'm not MOSS.

Paul is the candidate that best aligns with my views. Certainly not the ideal candidate though. I think Obama will get re-elected if there's no viable candidate though and that fucking scares me.

Dude I'm with you on pretty much all of that.
