A prettty general question

This might be a kind of stupid question, but what in you masses point of view are the heaviest bands ever? I was thinking along the lines of Iniquity, Mortuary, and Dying Fetus...But whatever the people speak.

Strapping Yound Lad's city is one of the heaviest thing I heard.... but everyone has a different way to describe heavyness so it's pretty hard to find a tangible answer.

Metal is, for the masses, music with screams (high pitched sometimes), fast drums, heavy guitar and mullets.
Forget Dying Fetus, people love to hate Metallica, Iron Maiden, sometimes Cradle of Filth of they're (un)lucky, they think that it is the heaviest shit ever.

I don't normally listen to metal just for the heaviness. Most people take "heavy" to be something akin to banging out palm-muted, low-register power chords. Heavy to me is a certain melody or certain musical "textures" or "colors" that produce an atmosphere of emotional heaviness or psychological stress.

definitely, SYL is pretty damn heavy to me.

but their are different versions of heavy. Like a slow melodic heavy, and a growling blastbeat crazy palm mutting guitar are two totally different versions of heavy, but are both heavy.

Korn? :tickled:

Ah...What I meant by "heavy" though is the stuff with relentless drumming, garbage vocals, overwhelming bass...etc. Y'know, the crap that's loud and incoherent just for the hell of it. I guess the way some of your references went pertained more to how well the music is played.

Dark Angel's Darkness Descends and Exhorder's Slaughter In The Vatican are the heaviest things I've ever heard. From my perspectice of what Heavy is, at least.

I'll second that, with emphasis on the Exhorder.

Some others that deserve mentioning are Order From Chaos - Stillbirth Machine and Grave - Into the Grave.

i think Devourment is pretty fucking heavy. there are a few parts of the song Choking On Bile that hit fucking hard (i've got a pretty decent system in my car).

it's too hard to choose a certain band like that. like it was said before there are different versions of heavy.

Esoteric in general. "Into the Autumn Shade" by Ceremonium, "Onward to Golgotha" and "Diabolical Conquest" by Incantation, "Forest of Equillibrium" by Cathedral, "Transcendence Into the Peripheral" by dISEMBOWELMENT.

I agree. To me heaviness is hardly ever about playing insanely fast or having wall to wall blast beats. I find the heaviest bands to be ones that create a really intense atmosphere and have massive, crushing riffs which make nearby houses fall down and cause passing old people to have spontanious panic attacks. Quite a few bands do this pretty well but Esoteric are the best one I've come across.

Yes, Esoteric is heavy, but it's very boring.
