Agalloch rips Dream Theater

My lack of musical knowledge would probably make you angry as well. It happens.

Pat, the problem is that some people are stupid enough to make comments about a band without EVEN CHECKING THEIR MUSIC!! How the fuck can somebody tell me that they know for a fact Dream Theater (for instance) is better than Agalloch without even listening to Agalloch?

Come on, if you're gonna share your opinion about something, at least know what the fuck you're talking about, you know? (not directed at you per se, btw)

People on this board DO suck sometimes, there's no question. (And I'm not talking about the ones who simply have a different taste than mine, before the flaming begins)

Oh, I can certainly understand why many people here would not be aware of and / or even like a band like Agalloch.

Though, before being included in Prog Power, would these same people give Therion, Amorphis, While Heaven Wept, or Arcturus the time of day?

Answering honestly, and not "kissing Glen's ass", the answer would be no.

Therefore, if Agalloch were ever invited to play PP, many people who say they suck now would certainly change their tune, and possibly even sponsor.

I have been an armchair viewer of this board for what, like 5 or more years now?

Believe me, there are MANY people I can call out on this, but you know me, I am Mr. Civil around here!!! :loco:

This is such a true statement, although I need to point out what some "very knowledgeable forum regulars" did on that While Heaven Wept discussion a while back (right after they were announced).

- While Heaven Wept? What the fuck? Is Glenn crazy? These guys don't deserve to be at ProgPower!"

- Well, have you checked them out?

- No, but I know they suck because they are labeled "Doom Metal."

I would agree with you with the exception of Therion. Therion has always had a rather diverse range of fans and sounds in my opinion.

Absolutely!!!
I recall the previous WHW discussions, which is part of the reason for my previous post.

Many people stroking them now were nowhere to be found a couple months ago, prior to their announcement.

Look, I know with any fest, just the announcement of a band to the roster will get previous naysayers to give them a shot, and even force themselves to like it to be "part of the crowd"

I could name 10 doom bands that based on the inclusion of WHW could be sensibly considered for the fest, though 80% (if not more) of people here would instantly say they suck...........that is of course until Glen books them.

Bottome line, Glen is one powerful mofo!!!!!!!!

Absolutely, though they were not widely accepted around these parts until AFTER there appearance at the fest.

As I said, more power to Glen for taking a chance on bands like that, since it seems they go over well in the end.

Can you actually give me a few? I'd like to give them a chance.

I would sponsor Agalloch in a hot second. I don't, however, think they'd keep the attention span of many, just based on the tempo of the music. A lot like how I imagine an Opeth show would do in this setting. People who go to this concert strike me as craving "high energy" bands more akin to Sabaton-like stage frollic.

Sure, and these are not your run of the mill Black Sabbath clones, as I could see how those would NOT be fit for this crowd / fest:

Solstice
Pagan Altar
Spiritus Mortis
DoomSword (The Candlemass of viking metal, if you wanna call them Viking)

Just curious, how did AMORPHIS go over at Prog Power?
I am just starting to get into them, and am curious how the PP crowd took to them.

I will disagree with you because I think that Opeth (as much as they may be a bit too big for ProgPower now) would do very well at ProgPower. I think there's plenty of people who would actually enjoy seeing them. And they've become a much more energetic live band over the past few tours.

If I recall correctly, Riverside and Amorphis were a bit "slower" tempo than your average ProgPower band and they did really well at ProgPower. Riverside actually got a standing ovation back in 2008...

That's what I have heard.
I have seen them twice, both around the Deliverance / Damnation period, and while they played well, they were not very exciting to watch.

I never bothered seeing any tour that followed, though I have heard comments similar to yours, that they have gotten better live.

Maybe I will have to check em out again sometime soon.

Agalloch are very intense live. Even some of the slower darker songs really draw you in.

from the Pagan Alter you showed me....they are nothing but a low rent Black Sabbath.

The floor was pretty full, the crowd was into it. I think they did pretty damn good.

From the back of the floor, it was about 1/4 empty. They did not pack the place like a headliner. Their live show blew my mind and there was a lot of talk on the forum after, but I'd say about 75% of the crowd loved them and 25% didn't really get it.

You'd need more than the one or two songs most of the crowd gives you to make them keep watching, and as soon as they started playing something like A Desolation Song people who don't know much or anything of them would instantly bolt.

I was gonna say... I don't remember there being that "oomph" that many headliners have gotten. I think it was much emptier for them than it was for Riverside to be perfectly honest. I liked them don't get me wrong, but I actually was sort of unimpressed with their live performance, though I may have had my expectations set too high.

Out of those 25%, I can almost guarantee that the vast majority were either the aforementioned "knowledgeable" attendees who dismissed Amorphis entirely without actually giving them a chance, or the ones who are easily scared of growls.
