Alehorn of Power Fest - Nov 2 Reggies

Well, it is a little after 3AM (well, technically 2AM), and I can not get to sleep.

All I can say is "HOLY SMOKES"
What a show. Every band brought their "A" game.
The sound was good and the Reggies staff was great to us.

All the Manilla Road guys were VERY cool as well.
They were really appreciative of playing this show and all the fans that came out.

I've never been a huge Manilla Road fan, but they blew me away. They played for two hours and I would have been happy if it had gone longer. I had no idea they would be so good. It must be because they have a German drummer now.

I'm in the same boat. I have a lot of their stuff and I liked them before, Deluge being the one album I love but I'd be lying if I said I was a HUGE fan before last night. They seriously made me a huge fan after last night and will probably dig even deeper into their stuff (and play it more often). I think seeing them live put it all together for me for them as a band.

Dave- you and your damn Germans!!!!

yeah it was a great show. Lots of fun. This is what a show should be like. Reggie's staff are always great. Always helpful to the bands. The sound was top notch last night. Every band sounded perfect up there. There was no low audio on vocals or playing around with the sound during anyones set. Even a great early turnout which I was shocked. I think with posting the set times the week before was a smart move. I think it showed everyone to get there early. With the past few reggies show as even Simon has seen...tons of people come way past 9 PM there now.

I think a blessing to the show was the Catus show next door. I think you would have had a lot of people drinking and eating over there before or during the early sets. It sucked for a lot of people though because we were able to sit at one of the tables right when you walked in. Then later found out that they moved a lot of people upstairs to eat.

It was hilarious watching Nueidi from Manilla Road crack on german power metal. We also found William. he just wandered into the restaurant so it worked out perfect actually.

There was a few people who were kicked out it seemed for no reason but later found out it was because of bringing in their own vodka and getting stupid. They spilled a drink on the manilla road merch table and puked in the mens bathroom. They took a swing at security as well outside during Manilla Road's encore. I was out passing out flyers. It was crazy...even the cops showed up.

For me High Spirits stole the show. It seemed most were there for them. Once Manilla Road got on and it started getting late...people all started leaving. The whole back area opened up and on the sides as well. I think almost no matter who plays...once it hits 12:30ish...people will start to leave. I have seen it happen with so many bands.

The hardest part was that there were so many people there getting a chance to talk to everyone was so hard and find time to watch the bands and stuff.

Bible of the Devil still suck as well.

High Spirits were fantastic, but to say that they're who everyone came for I think is flat out wrong. The thing is with any show, you're going to have those people who come for bands who aren't the headliner. Just because it thins out only means those who ONLY came for High Spirits left. Guaranteed a ton of people probably came just for Manilla Road and were just there for High Spirits. I know you won't agree with this but it happens at every show.

No, I get your point but literally you could see a difference in the crowd and I saw people leaving after High Spirits. I think though the lateness always will effect anyone playing last. With this being their city...they did have home field advantage. Manilla Road did put on a hell of a show. I am not a fan but they were tight and did great. Just bored me after hour 1.

Agreed on the lateness thing. Unfortunately that's just something that happens with Reggies shows. That was the nice thing about Orange Goblin is that they barely went beyond midnight.

Yeah...I think also with Manilla Road doing a 2 hour set...the casual fans watched them for the first hour and left. They got to see a nice run but was able to get out then. The worst I have seen was the Heathen / Destruction show. Destruction didnt get on stage till almost midnight on a thursday night. They played close to an hour and 40 minutes...I remember people looking at their phones before they came on checking the time and saying they had to leave soon because they worked early the next day. It is hard to have late shows. There is a certain crowd who doesn't care about being out late but your casual fan isn't going to want to be at any show that late. It was nice with daylight savings time though...got home and literally moved the clocks back an hour. Still crashed out real fast within 30 minutes of being home.

Great show, I'm glad I made it up there for it. Bible of the Devil and Harbinger didn't do anything for me (at all), but Manilla Road, High Spirits and Ancient Dreams were all great. Also that was like the first show I've been to where there were actual vendors (not just bands themselves selling merch), so that was awesome.

Interesting about the people getting kicked out. When I was sitting on the brick ledge during Bible of the Devil I saw 3 security guys come in and after 5 minutes of watching grabbing a guy from the middle row and escorting him out. Wasn't sure what that was about, nor the post-show police presence, but this makes more sense. o_O

EDIT:

Manilla Road played The Riddle Master, so I was happy. That and Necropolis were the first two Manilla Road songs I ever heard (I think...), and I still have a thing for them.

yeah i saw a few people get kicked up for what it seemed like nothing at first. Later when I saw the fight the one security guy was telling me all the things these guys were doing. basically snuck in their own booze and acting like fools. What people don't get that makes me mad is that when they do this stuff and the police have to come. it makes it harder to get shows there then. If you say have 20 metal shows a year there and half the police have to show up to....they will be less thrilled to book metal shows. Jason and I dealt with this in the old punk days at McGregor's in Elmhurst. After the shows people would have beer in their trunk and they would be drinking in the parking lot after the show. The police would have undercover cops there. Kids get busted for underage drinking. Club would get shut down for a few months and no shows.

There will always be dicks who ruin shows for people. Sure it got crazy fast last night outside but it only takes a few bad apples to ruin something.

Haha, the drunk asshole was my friend Nick. He's being a super big bitch about the whole situation. The Reggies staff was really kind to him and when they found that he had the bottle of vodka they just took it away and weren't going to give him any shit, but Nick asked for one last swig, which the bouncer let him, and chugged like half a fifth of Vodka. After an hour of sleeping it off he was better and was trying desperately to get back in but the security guards weren't having any of it. Not sure if he took a swing at any of the bouncers, but he was passed out so he might have. He wasn't the one getting in trouble with the security outside the venue though. At least, I don't remember him doing anything stupid besides his normal stupid shit.

But yeah, I can't say I'm on my friend's side here. I mean, I've brought in a bottle of booze into Reggies before, no big deal, but I also don't get violently drunk and pass out in the middle of the venue.

tl;dr version: don't get so fucking hammered at show and get kicked out.

But yeah, I had a spectacular time. However, I did leave my debit card there so I have to make another trek into the city on Tuesday and close it out and shit. Anybody in the suburbs want to chill and get lunch/beer with me or something?

Jason and I meet for lunch sometimes at the Brown's Chicken in Northbrook. Maybe the three of us could meet there. I don't know if you'd want to go that far north, though.

Yeah, I was actually gonna recommend the same thing!!!!!!

That may be a bit too far North if you are coming from deKalb (I assume).

But if you wanna, we could meet up.

he wasn't the one who took a swing at the security guard...it was some other guy. your moron freind was the one who puked all over the bathroom and spilled beer all over the Manilla Road merch.

Ah, yep. That was Nick lol.

I'm actually going to swing by the Bohemian Crystal to try and see if they have any Pilsner Urquell on tap. I gotta see if any place in the US has the real deal.
