People have different opinions on high-gain. PG uses a small amount of gain compared to most metal/shred guitarist. With too much gain you loose the pick attack or the punch as Corny said.

I don't think that all engl amps have the same gain..

Second time i ask, what ENGL amp do you have? I believe you have a thunder or a screamer?
A fireball, powerball, se, invader and the savage all have enough gain.
