Amon Amarth for beginners

maybey start with: Pursuit Of Vikings then With Oden On our Side, As Loong As the Raven Flies, and then Legend Of A Banished Man and finnish it off with Masters Of War and Ride For Vengeance and then every AA album in order...

Heh great, I also thought of Pursuit of Vikings :)

Actually, I didn't want to give him a full *cough* security backup of all my CDs, because then he wouldn't have a reason to buy them himself :p
Wanted to put them onto my iPod and go like "Hey, wanna hear some good music?" and hand it over to him. All of the albums won't fit on it, but maybe I could make a *cough* security backup of the best songs and give it as a present? I don't know about the copyright stuff but I know I have a license to put them onto MY iPod?
Knotty, knotty thing, this

I really like Under the Northern Star, I happened to get my friend into them by letting him hear An Ancient Sign of Coming Storm. Personally I'd put it up there as one of my favorite songs by Amon Amarth.

EDIT: I'd also like to add, Bleed for Ancient Gods, The Last with Pagan Blood, Without Fear... you know it's way to hard to try and think of a select few that are really good, they're all amazing.

ive liked AA at the first notes of pursuit of vikings and an ancient sign of coming storm. but i really fell for them with 1000 years of oppression. of course id suggest the same way, but as Heartless_Bastard said, and thats the thought of everyone here anyway

Ok, metallica...so, crunchy riffs, relatively clean production...thrashy...

Valhalla Awaits Me
Pursuit of Vikings

for starters, and then:

An Ancient Sign Of Coming Storm
Runes To My Memory
Death In Fire

and then:

Victorious March
Asator
Without Fear

and make him buy everything...

you could just lend him the copy of Wrath of the Norsemen that you should own

Hahahaha. I am like that guy Phelice is talking about. Except I also appreciate Amon Amarth even with Metallica being my favourite band. And I also agree with 'Heartless_Bastard' with the fact that their older Thrash-Metal music (such as Master, Ride The Lightning, etc.) were great but now they have started to lose it. We will have to wait for their new album and hope they get some more Thrash back.

And I recommend Thousand Years of Oppression to get that dude to listen to. Fucking wicked song. Or any of the other suggestions, all wicked songs!

And Bleed for Ancient Gods possibly, or even Metalwrath!!

Simple question: What songs would you recommend me to play to a guy to convince him that Metallica is not the best band in the world?

megadeth- set the world afire, countdown..., hangar 18, rust in peace, last rites/loved to death, tornado of souls
opeth- the leper affinity, demon of the fall, blackwater park, black rose immortal, when
iron maiden- the trooper, hallowed be thy name (hell, the whole number of the beast album)
ok, how about just about any other metal band. tell him to quit being such a closed-minded asshole

Yep, that's exactly what I'm talking about - you listen to their older stuff and it's actually quite amazing to listen too, but now it seems very much the same as other bands you can hear on the radio. It's not iconic anymore to say the least.

It really just comes down to his taste in music, not everybody will be able to enjoy the pure amazement that is Amon Amarth. It's their loss really. :)

I dunno.. I've had MANY a fight with those kinds of Metallica fans who think it's the best there is, and wont bother opening themselves to anything else.. and I think it could be a lost cause.. but you never know, doesn't hurt to try..

I 2nd the whole Pursuit of Vikings, Cry of the Blackbirds thing, Also Runes to my Memory could be a good start..

I'm one of those people except I'm not narrow minded and I can appreciate great metal! Amon Amarth are incredible but Metallica will remain my favourite band.

However when their new album comes out, if it is anything like St. Anger or worse I may have to think about that.

I am not even thinking of letting ANYBODY touch my original CDs :p
But I could lend him a backup of something like a best of or something... Look, I started like this:
Under the Northern Star
Pursuit of Vikings
Siegreicher Marsch

and then some of these:
...and soon the world will cease to be
An ancient sign of coming storm
Arson
Cry of the Black birds
Death in Fire
1000 years of Oppression
With Oden on our side

And I think I am gonna add:
As long as the raven flies
Masters of War
Runes to my Memory
Valkyries Ride

Good thing is that guy doesn't have a computer (yes, there still are such people!) so I won't have to worry he will get me into any trouble.

It is hard to put myself into the place of someone who hasn't ever heard of AA, and doesnt even know what Viking Metal is, but I wanna make it right... tough thing...

Thank you all very much for your help - what do you think of my compilation?

I'm new to this forum but not to Amon Amarth. I don't know if they have music choice in Germany like we do in the states but that is how I got introduced to Amon Amarth. My son and I just put on the death metal channel while we play World of Warcraft and we get to hear all kinds of music we nomallly would not hear. Vader, Dying Fetus, Dublin Death Patrol (which is Testament and Exodus) and plenty others come on. Sometimes we like the bands and sometimes we don't. But since I am a boring married guy who spends most of his time with his family, I don't get out to concerts and clubs much. So the death metal channel has really been a nice way to hear some new bands and even some older ones I have lost touch with.
