Can you show me a source? I'm looking online but this kind of search is difficult. It's not that I don't believe you guys, I just can't find any proof one way or the other. It sure as shit SOUNDS like 2 syllables. "Fay-uhl"

Shorter words are usually exempted from syllable rules. And in accordance with law and debate, you made the positive claim, so you have to show proof.

My positive claim is based on what I learned in school and common sense (say the word to yourself... you can't pronounce it with only one syllable, no matter how hard you try). However, I learned English a long time ago and have probably forgotten a lot of the little nuances like you just mentioned. So, I can't show definitive proof. This is why I'm asking you for it. So that I know for sure in the future and forego this sort of ignorance again haha.

Actually, (and I had absolutely no idea about this) it has to do with how many and where the word's vowels are placed. I always thought syllables were based off of the pronunciation of the word.
