And another.....The Blackening leaked!!

Just curious but why would a band leak their own album?

Hype. Metal bands (especially) don't rely on album sales for revenue. I've seen it done with huge artists too, though. There's a wikipedia page for MH's new album, and the last sentence states that this album was leaked on Jan 31. That's kinda suspicious in itself.

Remember that this band still sells hudreds of thousands of copies of each album worldwide. Supercharger was their least selling album and it sold 250 000 copies worldwide. Most bands would kill to be that popular. Machine head is one of the few bands along with Testament that I buy on sight. No need to listen to it first.

Not a bad marketing move to leak it yourself.....generates a bit of publicity in it's own way. We're talking about it after all.....

Still, the real money for the band is in touring and merch. After the label gets paid back what it put out, the band aren't left with much from CD sales.

Makes perfect sense to me...

Peanuts. Even a gold record (500,000) with only U.S. sales is shit these days. If you have a consistent string of golds, then an artist can make a decent living but otherwise it's all about shows and merchandise for $$$. I have friends with platinum records that live fairly meager lifestyles.

Do you have a Soundscan account? I'm wondering where you're getting those numbers from, because I think that they're way off.

Yep....recording budgets have gone way down which also reduces the bands debt to labels if they are given an advance to pay for the recordings, but yet the labels haven't increased the royalty % rates for bands from which these costs are recouped. Less risk exposure for a label should have some benefit to the artist but it simply doesn't happen.

Then again, a lot of artists who aren't selling in the millions but yet at a moderate level actually see "little" of the cash that's owed to them by labels anyway. A lot of bands have simply given up trying to get anything out of an album financially and are just focused on touring and merch for an income.

The only way I can see of making $$$ out of an album is to absorb the costs yourselves and go with the press & merch (with a label who actually pays their bands), or DIY.
