Hearts Alive is awesome.
Reminds me of Deliverance kinda.
great song...my fave mastodon's gotta be "megalodon" though, that little lick at the end, almost...metal-country sounding lol, so awesome......they were pretty sick live opening for slayer, and the crowd was diggin' it too, and slayer fans are pretty notorious i gather

agalloch - the mantle (entire album is one work)
isis - panopticon (entire album is one work)
the mars volta - deloused in the comatorium (entire album is one work)
i'll spice it up by putting some random non-metal shit i dig:
the beatles - eleanor rigby
the grateful dead - box of rain
the clash - rudie can't fail
at the drive-in - arcarsenal

the doors - love me two times

Well Just about every mastodon song is fucking awsome in my opinion, I just happen to be partial to that particular riff towards the end of that song...

^Such as Tool. Jon hates them and I like them a lot.
ack! actually i really liked aenima back in the day. the only thing i hate about tool is maynard. he incredibly pretentious. i have no use for such behavior. it irks me when people like him can only act that way becuase they are in a band. think about this: would somone like maynard, who dresses like a woman on stage, be able to exist in a normal society and hold a real job? no.
i couldnt get into lateralus no matter how much i tried (i own the album) but i really liked their older stuff (depsite all the silliness).

Just to take a few of your bands and display my favorite cuts by them

Opeth--Blackwater Park
Iron Maiden--Phantom of the Opera
Slayer--South of Heaven
Guns N' Roses--Estranged
Metallica--Fade to Black
Suicidal Tendencies--Institutionalized (sorry, cliche choice)
Queensryche--The Lady Wore Black
Danzig--I'm the One
U2--Bad
