I was listening to a few songs in my car which may fit into the nu-metal or other crappily named genre, and was wondering what is so wrong with these songs? I hear too much crap about mainstream music, but I think there is quite a bit of decent stuff out there.

Holy Man - One Minute Silence
What You Say - Skrape
5 - Ultraspank
Stupify - Disturbed
Tylers Song - Coal Chamber

All I know is I was pumped when I got home, and I wanted to share this with you.

hmn, i like that one minute silence song and the coal chamber song a bit (i have their albums) but that was before i heard opeth/katatonia, good music, its not all bad, deftones are good/slightly childish, but i just hate the people that listen to it, i mean you cant have a decent conversation with one of them and they seem, well annoying. obviously theres loads that are great people, but on the whole i hate them.

Well, this is what I have to say. Most mainstream music is similar and quite simplistic. Do not get me wrong there are a few what you would call mainstream artists I enjoy, but for the most part things I hear on the radio are boring and or repetitive. I t just so happens I do not look for boring and repetitive music, hence a vasy majority of what I listen to will never be on radio or MTV, thank god.

yeah i totaly agree, but the thing is people soon get bored of these songs, i dont think its possible to get board with opeth though:cool:

well, of the songs you listed, i've only heard the disturbed song. but here's my prob with most nu-metal. they use three chords because most of them just recently started playing guitar to pick up chicks and don't actually know anything about music. anyone can string together those songs. and what bugs me is the lyrics are always so predictable -- "leave me alone", "shut up, shut the fuck up", "i hate my parents," blah blah blah. most of these bands come from middle class backgrounds -- what the hell do they have to complain about? stop whining! and they all think if they tattoo and pierce themselves up, it will make them more hardcore and aggressive, therefore respectable. yuck. and here's the kicker -- they all think they're actually as heavy as it gets. they have no idea there are bands out there that would destroy their eardrums. i'm not a fan of the metal fans that try to act all evil, but i would love to see someone sacrifice fred durst on stage. :heh:

i have to admit that i sometimes find myself bobbing my head along with it, but i just can't respect it one bit, and that's what makes or breaks a musician for me.

I agree, my roommate bought that abomination Hybrid Theory by Linkin Park and stopped listening to it a month after he got it, I bought Images and Words six years ago and still listening to it regularly.

whats an avatar? the i depend on darkness thing is from a song i like is that what you mean? and i dont really care too much, i mean i dont wear my Vader top without a jacket on top as i dont like the back which has a pic of the devil on it (when i bought it i only saw the front, otherwise i might not have got it)

I think one of the reasons we have constantly changing music and fashion trends are because most people are prone to conformity. For a vast number of people belonging to a certain group is of great importance, which is why they will conform to whatever is popular at the time. Other factors are things such as gratuitous advertising, low self-esteem, and some people are just really shallow.

 , oh yeah, i said on the Zyklon wow thread that i didnt want to buy the album after seeing that picture, thats sorta why i put it there, to remind me to give stuff a chance sorta personal, plus i really like the band and thats the only picture that could work, i tried others but they didnt work (if you can remember when i changed it about 5 times as you couldnt see anything) :)

My thoughts (and I like Tylers song, and the one minute silence one) is that I couldn't care less what genre music is albelled. I care about the music. Generally I don't like things like numetal because generally they aren't well written at all. You listen to a song, know it by the end and get bored of it after about four times. So its not the genre I have a problem with, its that the majority of artists in that genre have no talent...

There are of course many exceptions

ok, i hope your not refering to me, as even if i wanted to be in a group im the only one thats even heard of Opeth in my school. , im lucky people in my year don't really care about being in a popular group, and were all just different, everyone i hang around likes rap/rnb mostly , and one nu-pop, and one is into scar and 80's. and no one seems to have any problems with anyone. i see the lower years who hang around in their gangsta rap and nu-pop scater groups mainly. soon we will all grow out of it as old men and women, hopeful wise ones :)

I usually do give music a chance and try to rarely generalize. From what I've heard the main reasons why I can't stand nu-metal is because of the lack of any sort of melody (songs seem to be strictly rhythm-based), simple, boring song structure, unintelligent lyrics, and how they tend to use a pathetic image to mask their lack of talent. Also, another thing that really pisses me off is how it has been customary for these bands to be referred to as "metal". No, I generally don't give a shit about labeling music either, but it's very frustrating that when I try to talk to others about metal, they think these bands are what metal music is all about and they have no concept about what "metal" really is.

Come on. lets admit it, thats true for at least a few if not the majority of black and death metal bands....

Oh you're definitely right and I've never said otherwise. I don't know if I'd say the majority though. There are some really shitty death/black metal bands out there. I've heard very few that match the lack of melody, pathetic lyrics, and lack of talent of most nu-metal. I'm not saying they're not out there though. All I'm saying is that I've heard very few that reek of as much shit.:D

I never claimed that you ever said otherwise. I'm just pointing out that if thats ur only reason for not listening to numetal, surely the same applies to black (I'm just teasing really, I know you probably would listen to well written nu metal)

Admitedly, nu metal is more consistently shit than black. In fact - "black like my darkened soul.... evil.....black.....dead of night on midwinter....." u like my lyrics? :loco:
