Ehm...say what you say but I don´t think voice should be harassed that way. I´ve sometimes lost my voice partially after singing...rock style...or something, but never growling.
Though I´ve got a fucking sore throat a few times after some drunken growl-yowl and warm beer with Thales guys But the result only is my whole neck and throat are so sore I can´t sing/growl loud.
Of course it´s all about growling style. The style I use puts pressure on false vocal chords instead of the real ones thus allowing me to sing clean vocals as if I hadn't growled at all.
Still, if I take a few weeks break in growling my throat gets a bit sore on the first growling time.
Anyway, I think you should experiment with lower volume first and find a way that doesn´t hurt that much.
