Well this thread took a turn for the worst, didn't it? Everything changes over time, especially people. Bands are made up of people, and they change too (unless they're AC/DC or Motorhead, and maybe Bolt Thrower). The band you listen to now won't be the same band in ten years. It might be the same bunch of guys, but they'll have grown as people and as players. If they're successful, they'll want to remain successful, so they'll need to follow whatever path there is to maintain that. If they're not successful, they'll either change to become successful, or they'll give up. If we wanted bands not to change, then we should make sure that they all split up after two or three records, or change their name to something else. Bands are going to change, and it's sad when they start playing stuff we don't like, but expecting them to continue just ploughing the same old ground year after year just to please us is wishful thinking. The reason we often like a band's early work is because that's what we first heard of them, when it was fresh and exciting. As they grow and mature as a band, they grow distant from that, and it's not easy to go back to. Nor should they be expected to. If I was the same person now as I was ten years ago, I wouldn't be posting here or doing the stuff I'm doing now with my life. If the band you like (or used to like) was still the same band they were ten years ago, they'd still be playing crappy clubs and making cruddy demos no one will listen to. Change and progression is a natural thing, and it happens to bands (and music scenes) as much as it happens to everything. If you don't like what a band has become, stop listening to them, think about the joy they gave you when you first heard them, and find someone else that sounds like what they used to.
