I picked up the new Bullet for My Valentine CD recently and REALLY REALLY like it. It made me pull their first CD that I had purchased a while back out and re-visit that. I really like both CD's, however, I'm normally not a fan of this genre of music. I can't figure out what makes this band THAT different than any of the other "Victory records-like" bands that I just can't listen to.

Another example for me is Arch Enemy. Fucking LOVE AE, but can't get into other bands that are similar (although I am starting to like CoB).

Anyone else have this issue where there is one band that sticks out for you in genre that you typically deplore? My cousin who is really into thrash and very aggressive metal inexplicably likes Power Quest (????).

Was curious about the people on the board? Thoughts on why these anomalies happen?

I was thinking of posting about them as well... "Tears Don't Fall" got me into the band and their first CD is OK but SCREAM...AIM...FIRE is really strong from start to finish! Catchy songs and their harmony leads/licks (very Maiden influenced) are really good... I normally don't like the death growls but they do it at just the right spots to emphasize and add to the song. The singers are believable to me and they really convey the songs emotion well... that's why I can relate. Great disc and I would recommend anyone to check it out. I saw them open for Maiden last year and was slightly disappointed but that could have been because their sound and mix were terrible. I would like to see them again on their own terms.

I am a huge prog-metal fan, Ian can attest to that.

However, I have a huge affinity for both Behemoth and Dimmu Borgir. Why? Probably the extremity of Behemoth's music and just the sheer greatness of Dimmu. All other bands from their respective genres I cannot stand.

There's not a huge ammount of death metal bands that I'm into, save for Cannibal Corpse, Ammon Amarth, and Behemoth. I also grew up as a huge alternative nerd, and that carried over..so I'm still really into LiVE and Collective Soul.

I hear ya man. I lived in Seattle during the Grunge era, so I own all the Pearl Jam, Alice in Chain and Soundgarden albums. I'm also a huge fan of Collective Soul as well.

They are a very nice alternative to listen to occasionally.

Vocals are alot of times the thing for me. Some death/black I may like inspite of the vocals, only Death, Immortal and Opeth do I actually like the vocals. In order for this to happen I think it is my need for melody, the music can be very aggressive but must have a strong sense of melody and the vocals even if heavy must have a 'sung' quality and not just barking a cadence like all hardcore and metalcore seem to do. But then on the other hand I don't care for the super high pitched vocals ala the Halford clones (but do love Halford)

Like what you like.
No need to justify it.
I do know what you are getting at though.

Certain bands may appeal for different reasons.

One of my personal guilty pleasures is the last HIM disc, "Black Light" This is one of the catchiest CDs I have ever heard.
