hey, they actually went for distorted bass. plus the double tracked part around 9:00 (unless thats keys in there) its pretty cool, i'm glad they're trying new things

i think thats what they could be reffering to, i think i remember reading that Martin doesnt like to distort. The guy overdrives his bass alot, but not to the point of distorting. Also his bass is a Marcus Miller, alot of punch and i mean alot. Not forgetting he likes making those mids roar and his signiture fender helps with that.
 
Someone recently posted pics from Opeth's first SOTU show, and I *think* I saw Martin with a pedalboard. So it's possible.

I also think I hear a bit of pop/slap bass around 4:00 in. Anyone else hear this?
 
It sounds a bit like numetal, to be completely honest... and the distorted bass just adds more numetally feeling...
