Alright guys, I lurk this forum ALL the time and finally got off my ass and made an account this morning after seeing this thread, so i may as well jump in and say hello straight away, gotta get the awkward first post out the way haha.
I've seen Edge of the Earth by Sylosis mentioned a few times already and I've gotta say it's easily my favourite album of this year, and to be honest i'd be suprised if i hear anything that tops it for a long long time. Everything about it is just an absolute masterpiece. I was a pretty big fan of their first album already but after getting EOTE I was just blown away. I genuinely think I must have played it back to back in full a couple of hundred times since getting it in the summer. The depth and innovation in the songwriting is just amazing. From late 2009ish I'd been checking out all their studio videos/blogs and I was already expecting an album that took some serious listening after what I'd seen and heard from them. Now i think the sheer size and vastness of the record is one of my favourite things about it, it's such a good album to enjoy as a whole from start to finish and just absorb myself in listening to. Everything seems so organic and beautifully written, and I feel like I completely understand where they were trying to go with it. I don't think I will ever get bored of listening to any of it, ever. I met and chatted to the drummer and guitarist arout early 2010 at a tiny headline show they played near me, and they were all very cool, very nice guys who seemed genuinely interested to talk to their fans, as well as being just unimaginably tight onstage.
Needless to say the production is killer too. Pretty much the first thing I've heard from Scott Atkins as a producer that sounds a bit more feeley and natural, and not crazily tight (not that there's anything wrong with that mind you, but it's nice to hear someone pushing that sound for once). i don't think there's any aspect of the mix that I don't absolutely love. Totally sold me on the marshall JVM as an amp too, really want one now. Beautiful tones everywhere on that record. The straight up left/right rhythm tone is fucking awesome.
Hopefully I don't sound too obsessive here. i just really really love this album.
