in my opinion it comes down to Hellhammer or Frost, and I have to pick Hellhammer just for badassness cause of all the shit he had to put up with from the murder and shit.

the thing is it's like, speed alone is generic, anyone can stomp bass and blast snare, and that's why HellHammer is cool, he throws down fucking technical rudiments throughout his playing, it's very marching corps influenced, and I love that.

Ole from Dissection
Trym
Faust
The dude from Marduk,I forget his name.
Animal from The Muppets.Look at him.Dont even dare to try and tell me he aint old school Black Metal style.

I think I've commented on this before and I will say Hellhammer!! In the past I just thought he was kind of cool becuase he was a legend, but when I heard "Thorns" by Thorns I really got impressed!
I also think Trym is superb! His drumming on "The source of Icon E" is amazingly fast!
I've always liked Frost too! His drumming on "Inri" is pretty insane!
As a drummer myself I think I can comment on this subject pretty good. It's not that I wanna say "You have to say that and that", but I think it's pretty fair to say that Fenriz isn't one of the best drummers. I haven't heard him play anything that I couldn't play myself. On "Plaguewielder" I can recall one thing that I would might not have thought of myself, but that's all! The rest I've heard him play is standard black metal drumming.
Speed is of course good as well as stamina, but that doesn't impress me that much anymore. I can't play a 3-4 min. song just with blastbeats with no stops, like Frederik does on Marduk's "Panzer division Marduk", but technical stuff impresses me more nowadays! It's of course a matter of taste, but there's also a thing called technical level and I think it's safe to say that a guy like Dennis Chambers is technically better than Lars Ulrich, which is a crappy drummer! Dennis Chambers is also my favorite drummer at the moment as he totally blew me away when I saw him playing live with Mike Stern! Incredible techincal level! I think I've mentioned it before, but I did an interview with Hellhammer at last years Roskilde Festiva and asked him if he knew Dennis Chambers and he said "Dennis Chambers is like a hell of a drummer! He's a monster!!"

Wait a second!!!!

I can't possibly be the only person here who believes that Trym Torsen is only pretty good, but not terribly inventive, like his Emperor predecessor Bard "Faust" Eithon, whose really inventive skill (i Think) is hidden within the ItNsE production.

However, Trym's contribution to Prometheus is pretty cool

That is because your point of view is flawed. You look at the drumming from a technical point of view while that is exactly NOT the way to look (listen) to black metal.

what the fuck are you talking about, the technicallity is the main attractor

You have a lot to learn. Just because Dream Theater can solo your ass off, that doesn't mean they are better than say Black Sabbath or Iron Maiden. And that is even more emphasized in black metal.

you have no clue what you're talking about, the appeal of black metal is the technicallity of it. if you want sloppy shitty playing, go listen to grindcore
