Best Burzum album from both eras

Funny, I just eBayed "Hvis Lyset Tar Oss" and it appeared on my desk this morning. I know absolutely fuck all about BM as a genre and decided to get that because it's supposed to be a classic. Not quite sure what all the fuss over THE MUSIC is all for. I don't think I quite get Black Metal...

Hvis Lyset Tar Oss is a great album, from start to finish. Tomhet is gorgeous.
The two electronic ones have some nice parts as well. Can't think of specific song titles atm, but it makes nice relaxing or night-time music.

burzum is decent black metal at this point. id say with the current output of the USA scene, burzum is put more into a humbled perspective. but dont get me wrong, credit and innovation is given where its due...and burzum is undeniably responsible for most of the "true" black metal of today. but for 1991 and so on, i beleive burzum's influence on the scene was no less important than darkthrone, emperor, mayhem and the like.
that being said...his prison albums are alright. semi-listenable instrumental/ambientish stuff that in the dark/medieval/black metal context do fine, but in a broader realm of instrumental music in general, gets swallowed up and forgoteen due to its redundancy and amateurish approach (understandably so). hvis lyset tar oss being his most interesting and sophisticated work of the metal albums, and Hlidskjalf being the most sophisticated and mature of the two instrumental non-metal works.

You can't go wrong with Det Som Engang Var or Hvis Lyset Tar Oss. DSEV is a bit easier to digest due to the shorter songs and clearer production. Hlidskjalf is pretty nice. It's not essential like his earlier work though.

I find Hvis.. has some weak songs and is rather repetitive while Det.. is stronger overall. Plus it has Key to the gate and Lost Wisdom which are epic masterpieces. Both albums are nowhere near perfect but are still good to own

Every Burzum album is a fantastic work of art.
Flawless and unique Black Metal, capturing the true dark spirit with amazing beauty. Vikernes' vocals are honest, real.
The repetition is part of the hypnotic beauty Burzum's musical vision holds. It keeps you in the shadows, gazing at the world around.
The amateur aspect of Burzum is what keeps it within an almost physical grasp of the listener, there is nothing to hide behind, it is honest music with honest expression.
I know, I sound totally cheesy, but this is really how I feel. I hate Varg's racism and right-sided philosophy, but his music is pure art and genius. I love it, his work is perfectly executed.

however much i like burzum, there is no way i can find any enjoyment in varg's infamous casio works (including the pieces found in the earlier albums, like tomhet). that being said, i like different aspects of the earlier albums, but i seem to be hooked onto the hvis lyset tar oss and filosofem a little more. they are more hypnotic. det som en gang var (the song) and erlibket die töchter des firmaments still put me in a trance-like mood after all these years.
