When an album starts, the first songs, IMO, are all brilliant. April Ethereal isn't really the first in my book. You've just got to count Prologue. Didn't it give you goose bumps the first time you heard it? OK, how about the second time...knowing whats to come. I think that was brilliant. AND ADVENT! The way it starts off...just busts open the floodgates. Killer! And well, I can tell by the votes that many of you appreciate The Moor. Unsettling almost...then the comfort of the first full notes. MMmm. Good stuff. The Leper Affinity is truly a song that I will be continuously appreciating for many years to come because I don't think I've fully grasped what it's all about. My view on it will change.
But for today, I admire "In The Mist She Was Standing" the best. Wow. Just fucking wow. I love the way it's just relentless...going on and on, change after change...up and down. It's fucking awesome! Their first song on their first album. The impression they hoped would keep the attention to hear the next...the one that would reach out to starving metalheads and grab them by a choke hold and scream...
"We are OOOOOOOOOPEEEEEEEEETH!!"
OK, maybe it wasn't like that. Actually, I'm sure. Yeah, sure, I've been told I get a bit nutty/overboard praising Opeth.
