IMO, it's one of those rare albums--like Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon", that most all of the songs work great by thereselves, yet at the same time, it makes an amazing whole album at the same time.

The value of the whole is still greater then the sum of its parts

It reminds me of Stagnant sorta, and in a way it does have a mild suprise. It links back to the very beginning of Deadhead, creating a perfect loop.
