Let's all start a black metal vocabulary thread.
Post a word and please explain to us all what it means.

Let's start with "tr00" (the most obvious one...)

-tr00, anyone or anything will qualify as tr00 when he's very old school, doesn't goes with the flow and sticks to his own original ideas...

You people do know that the only people who have ever used terms such as 'tr00' are the ones who make fun of black metal, not the actual people who listen to black metal, right? A good percentage of my friends like black metal, and we've not once discussed how true or evil a band is.

Yep, I do. I remember that he not once used the terms 'tr00' or 'evil'. I also remember that while he was rather opinionated and held extreme views on politics and society, he was also very well spoken and expressed his views better than most people can. To say that he's an idiot because I don't agree with him would be rather ignorant on my behalf. Not once did he give off the 'stupid black metal fan mentality' everyone talks about. In fact, I know many people who listen to black metal that don't subscribe to this mentality.

Fair enough, but I feel what he discussed was along those same lines. In my opinion, it's just as asinine to base an opinion on a band solely on ideology, as it is to base one on evil or tr00ness. Say what you will, but, to me, it's pretty much the same thing.

This kinda reminds me of some of the first posts I made at UM. When it
comes to all this 'true' stuff, and who is true, it's an endless discussion
it seems.

To me it's quite simple (or is it?): If a black metal band makes me feel
like their music is genuinely connecting with my most primitive and dark
sides, that's 'true' BM to me. I can feel a certain energy and an
emotional 'don't give a fuck' -freedom, or an ultimately relaxing
atmosphere that no other kind of music provides me. Hard to explain,
and some people might get this shit from other music (but I bet it's
not the exact same atmosphere, no) but to me it's clear. Still I have
to ask myself what are the 'axioms' or whatever of black metal?
Personally I like to think that I feel it when some music is powerful
enough in the way I look upon genuine? black metal.
What it is to you; I do not know... The above statement is quite
diplomatic, as I am tired of the same black and white view that is
usually displayed.

Actually, I started thinking about something a while ago:
I discovered bands like Emperor and Satyricon myself at their debut
time. Just happened to listen to it in the record store, never heard of
them before. Good music, so I bought it. In these cases I know it was
my own decision, no friends or media had anything to do with those
purchases. That's good. But at the same time I know that friends and
media made me stick to it even more by making it cooler. Claiming such
bands to be more genuine and genious than most others. (of course I
agree :p). But this whole shit about being more free-thinking than
anyone else because of choosing this music, or being more special, or
opposing society/religion and so on... self-illusion?

I am always tempted to say that old stuff from Darkthrone, Mayhem,
Burzum and so on (and on), is the fundament.. True Norwegian black
metal... yes or no... I want it! NOW!

(All hail these philosophical rantings)

I listen to black metal, but I make fun of it too. Black metal guys actually do say "true". True basically means they're Norwegian, because that's what black metal's purpose was from the beginning: to hate and rebel against Christianity to restore the old Norse ways.

Well, not really. True in the black metal sense represents more a cold and dark, yet majestic and envigorating feeling much like Lordenlil's suggestion. The foundations of black metal without the commercialism that inevitably filtered in.

If you're truly into black metal, then it is easy to determine what is true or not. It's not to be used as a synonym for 'good', though, which is what a lot of people misunderstand when non fans are discussing the genre.

I make fun of everything possible, as well :p

But no wonder ppl say TRUE when it is printed on the back of some Darkthrone records 'true norwegian black metal' (record company did this?) and other statements made by misc bands over the years.. hehe... well well

True isn't about if it's Norwegian or not, but if the music is evil and grim.

I tend to prefer "true" over "Aryan" though.
