This kinda reminds me of some of the first posts I made at UM. When it
comes to all this 'true' stuff, and who is true, it's an endless discussion
it seems.
To me it's quite simple (or is it?): If a black metal band makes me feel
like their music is genuinely connecting with my most primitive and dark
sides, that's 'true' BM to me. I can feel a certain energy and an
emotional 'don't give a fuck' -freedom, or an ultimately relaxing
atmosphere that no other kind of music provides me. Hard to explain,
and some people might get this shit from other music (but I bet it's
not the exact same atmosphere, no) but to me it's clear. Still I have
to ask myself what are the 'axioms' or whatever of black metal?
Personally I like to think that I feel it when some music is powerful
enough in the way I look upon genuine? black metal.
What it is to you; I do not know... The above statement is quite
diplomatic, as I am tired of the same black and white view that is
usually displayed.
Actually, I started thinking about something a while ago:
I discovered bands like Emperor and Satyricon myself at their debut
time. Just happened to listen to it in the record store, never heard of
them before. Good music, so I bought it. In these cases I know it was
my own decision, no friends or media had anything to do with those
purchases. That's good. But at the same time I know that friends and
media made me stick to it even more by making it cooler. Claiming such
bands to be more genuine and genious than most others. (of course I
agree
![Stick Out Tongue :p :p](data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7)
). But this whole shit about being more free-thinking than
anyone else because of choosing this music, or being more special, or
opposing society/religion and so on... self-illusion?
I am always tempted to say that old stuff from Darkthrone, Mayhem,
Burzum and so on (and on), is the fundament.. True Norwegian black
metal... yes or no... I want it! NOW!
(All hail these philosophical rantings)
