Brett loves the Torpedo - Torpedo Live content

completely different beasts with different price/quality/amount of features : IMO, it's like comparing a POD with only one amp sim, with an axe fx/eleven rack or even an high-end amp with a lot of tweakability and versatility, like a Mesa Boogie Roadster or an Engl Special Edition
or comparing the POD 1.0 speaker cab/mic sims with the current Nebula/Recabinet stuff

the Palmer is way cheaper of course, and has been there for way longer, and can do the job for some (and that's what a lot of pros (Jerry Cantrell among others) have been using live before the Torpedo & cie came around)

check out the official website and videos to see what it's about, it's well documented

im trying to get a loaner unit to test for myself.

I have the feeling that a tube amp into the torpedo plugin is no improvement to a regular ampsim chain.
Come and bash my statement!!!!

Equates saying a tube amp is the same than an ampsim... or that they both transfer all the same to the Torpedo or a regular IR loader or something in between (recabinet / nebula for ex.).

What makes you think so ? Just curious.

Why do you think all the guys with amp heads using impulses still use their amp heads rather than the ampsims ?

As good as today's ampsims are :

-they do not equate an amphead (they sound "close" and are a "simplified" version)
-they sound different than an amphead
-you might love your amphead and know it perfectly and not be able to find something that sounds the same in the current available ampsim
-if you have an amphead you like and you can use it silently (and considering changing tubes is not a problem for you) and it's close and hooked up to your soundcard, why bother with an ampsim (providing you want/prefer the amp head sound) ?

EDIT : on the other hand, i tried using ampsims (TSE and LePou stuff) with the Torpedo VB-101 and it sounded awesome !

I think you're wrong, but it's always very hard to judge from other people's clips, some will make a regular ampsim sound awesome and some will make a Mesa Mark IV sound horrible...

Exactly.

The only way to find out is use one amp head you like and are used to (play with, record with (miking)), and then use it with the Torpedo plugin to see if it still feels like your tube amp.
NB : the PI-FREE has only one cab/mic so you'd better try the full plugin (PI-101 WOS) (you need an ilok 2 for that tho') since each cab/mic combination sounds different and might/might not fit one's tastes

Can you tell the difference (soundwise and "feel"-wise) between using your amp head in a traditional impulse loader (or even nebula/recabinet) and using an ampsim in a traditional impulse loader (or even nebula/recabinet).
Have you tried that already ? Do you feel they both (amp head vs ampsim) translate exactly the same to the impulse loader or there is a noticeable difference ?
Do you feel that impulses in general sound "fake/static" or still respect the signal source they're fed with ?
