Can Rick Rubin save Metallica?

I disliked them since the Black album.. around 1991-1993 ... you weren't even a cumshot inside your mother at that time.. so no it's not a "cool" thing or a recent thing.. the old school hardcore metallica fans lost interest around that time like me.. last time i bother to see them live was in 1988 ... and they haven't done anything for metal since Master of Puppets.. everything after that album was generic or non important to metal in general ... Zep, Sabbath, Stones etc.. never got the same reaction because they always managed to make a album or two that is classic or rooted in their earlier work... Metallica hasnt.. maybe with Rick they will make a comeback to their roots pre 1988 ... if not .. they should just disappear. the worst thing they ever did was bring Bob Rock on their albums to produce... getting Rick Rubin was the only smart thing they have done in years.... i would of prefered they get Flemming Rasmussen.. but hey let's see what happens.. maybe they will restore my faith in them...

I have nothing wrong with being a critical fan, but those bands you mentioned have sucked for years, and actually METAL fans are the most fickle and disrespectful of all genres. I did see them live in 1993 and they kicked soooo much ass and was IMO the best band in the world.

Kill
Ride
Master
Justice

are legendary and insanly some of the best music EVER written, lyricaly and musically. They went into a different direction with the Black Album, a direction I too wasn't very impressed with. But if you actually listen to that album objectively it was a damn good album. Was it as good as the other music THEY wrote? no, but those are almost impossible standards to live by.
If you hated Metallica in '91, then you weren't that big of a fan to begin with, or you just have personal issues. How can everyone love a great band that has made terrific music and four great albums hate them due to one album that wasn't as good as the others? I don't know how anyone can be such a sinnic. Listen, as I said in other posts I hated St. Anger and Reload, but I will always love what they did, because I can still put in Master and still be just as amazed today as I was 15 years ago when I bought the tape. Metallica is legendary, and is one of the best bands of all time. Have they sucked lately, YES, but as I said before.......Slayer, Sabbath, Maiden, Aerosmith, Beatles, Stones, Zepplein all sucked when they got older and it was impossible for them to duplicate what they did in the past, and to live up to unrealistic expectations. I am not a Metallica apologist, I probably won't even buy their next album becuase, GUESS WHAT, IT WILL SUCK, but I will always respect them for what they have done, and love to see them live when I can.

i say they produse thier own, lets see what metallica sounds like without a fucking producer

I never said i didnt respect them for their first 3 or 4 albums (though i wouldnt categorize AJFA as a classic metallica album) .... i just have no respect for them after those as well as their actions like not letting Kirk have more input, Lars being greedy, having Bob Cock as producer etc.. etc.. i still listen to the first 3 albums from time to time... so obviously i dont hate their past... and i dont hate them because of one album.. i hate them because of every album in the 90's... so get it right.. as for Slayer, Sabbath, Maiden, etc... they all had more then 3 albums that were considered classic... chit.. Slayer's albums are considered classic from their debut to Season's/Abyss... Maiden : everything up to Seventh Son... Beatles : all of them... Sabbath: up to Sabotage/Sabbath bloody Sabbath;Heaven and Hell etc. Stones: all their 60's stuff and miscellaneous ones in 70's and 80's... Zeppelin : all of them except Coda...Aerosmith: all their 70's stuff... so seriously dude.. your making excuses for them and being apologetic whether you know it or not... Metallica is not the Be all and End All.. if you worship them.. then more power to you.. but if you are going to call them legends seriously do not put them up on a pedestal with maiden and Sabbath among others... they did alot for Thrash Metal in the beginning and that was it.. I do hope this turns out to be a good if not great album.. but im not holding my breath... Rick being the producer is a good first step but they also need to let Kirk have more input like in the old days.. anyways enough said....

I wont give them an ounce of respect, they dont deserve it. 4 decent albums in the fucking 80's.

whether they were good or not is beyond the question
the fact is metallica did alot for metal that no other band has
period
many bands have gotten their start being extremly influenced by 'tallica
they deserve respect and if you like their music or not, cool. then they don't deserve your money. but they always will deserve respect and admiration

I think most people really just have a vendetta against Metallica because they think Lars put Napster out of business when they were pre-teens and they couldn't download shit anymore. Drum sound aside, St. Anger is certainly not worse than any of the -core bands out these days. There was nothing commercial at all about the album. I believe it was Pyrus who wrote up a very fair review at M-A. It's not nearly as bad as people make it out to be. I no longer am very attached to Metallica, but still, most people are way too harsh.

How the fuck could you have seen Metallica in '88 and write like a fucking 2 year old? Its a pain reading your posts.

I'm not going to bother arguing with you either, you really dont sound like an actual fan of the band and you also dont know what the fuck you are on about.

Am I the only one here who thinks Justice is their best album (or at least as good as Puppets)?

To be honest, a nice mix of the two would be damn-near perfect. I'd call it '...And Puppets for All'.

I prefer AJFA, actually.

I still respect Metallica for their old works, but honestly I think they are irrelevant these days.

There are so many great bands out today, that there really is no need to rest all of your hope in a band from the 80's who haven't released a good album since AJFA.

Ill never understand why a band like Metallica have been put on this pedestal of being one the legendary metal bands when they have only released 3/4 good albums. When a band like Death, with an almost perfect discography are barely known in the mainstream metal world.

Given their current track record (i.e. Re-Load and St. Anger), I'm not holding out much hope, but this could change. Some of my favorite bands (Iron Maiden, Morbid Angel, Slayer) have released the odd crappy album (No Prayer for the Dying and Dance of Death; Gateways to Annhiliation; South of Heaven); but, this didn't stop me from listening to them.

I am glad that they have ditched Bob Rock - I think that the quality has gone down since he's come on board back in 1990. Rick Rubin, on the other hand, seems to have the Midas Touch with damn near everyone he works with, so there's still a possibility that the next album may have something to offer.

What's the big deal with Rick Rubin ?(everything somewhat heavy he touches sounds like nu-metal). Metallica is not going to release a good album regardless who is producing it anyways. Metallica 's/t' is the bands last attempt at a solid album imo.
