Christian Black Metal!

The whole "atheism as a religion" thing is nothing new, and has been dismantled numerous times. Do you really want to get into that? I'm game if you are.

I must have seen you argue that one out at least 6 or 7 times, if not more.

Thank you for proving my point, james. *kisses*
you sound like my born-again step-father... making claims to having won some "point" or the other, without the least attempt to quantify what exactly that point was. lol

a common trait of the blindly religious maybe? ;)

rather than just developing your own inner spirituality and moral code

find your own spirituality, develop your own moral center

See James - you have just hit my point right on the head. One has to find their own way in life, live up to ones own standards, ones own beliefs - that is true spirituality. We do not need "organizations" to commune with whatever higher power we hold ourselves to - be it nature, science, or something else. I'm my own judge and jury - my own moral code keeps on the right side of the road. The only one I'll let down if I fail is myself and those I love and hold dear. And it should be noted that I'm harder on myself than any "organization" could ever be.

I recently had a conversation with a minister down at Yale while having one of my regular oncology check-ups and we began talking about spirituality and it's personal nature. While he is a man of God, he was understanding and quite frankly pleasantly surprised to find out about my beliefs, what makes me the man I am.

I told him that while I may commune in my own way with some form of higher power, it was my higher power, one that I never ask anything of. I don't ask for things, I don't pray for personal gain, I don't really pray at all. I only ask my higher power, my center of belief, for the strength to manage the things that come to me - regardless whether they are good or bad. Good things do not always end the way the begin and bad things can have a way of turning out good - but they all need strength to manage. That's all I've ever asked myself for - the inner strength to manage my life.

Believe in yourself if you are to believe in anything. The only ultimate judge of your actions is yourself.

I'll follow no one - I have a hard enough time following myself.

Did you not read what I wrote about myself James? I myself can't stand most churches today. I learned to think for myself and question everything. But you just try to lump me in with a group of people, and try to insult me while doing it? Don't assume to know me, unless you really know me. I've already stated my personal views on things in another thread which I won't bother to find. Because all this is beside my point, which you are also straying from. The point was...which I DID make...is why must someone (not you specifically...I never even mentioned you) jump on someone when they say they are of a certain belief system, and try to tell them how wrong they are, and their ideas are just a waste of time? The need to prove others wrong and assert one's own ideas over others....THIS was my point. I'm just trying to have a civil discussion and put an honest question out there to make everyone think a little. Obviously...this point was lost. Without sounding like a hippie or Rodney King...."can't we all just get along"? I guess not.

oh the exquisite irony.... go back and read what I said, thanks.

never-mind, i'll copy and paste for you: "FTR, this is not personal to you Funky... you're cool, and we're cool... it's just one of my favorite subjects to debate. please do not take any of this personally. that being said.. the gloves are off!"... from like 3 posts back.

it's called debate because it usually entails challenging, even heated, but still civil discussion between proponents of each side of a given subject... in this case, religion vs. ... oh let's call it naturalism. i'm sure you'll want to call it atheism, but let it be noted that i have not once referred to myself as an atheist. you however, have most certainly referred to yourself as a Christian. :Saint:

it's called debate, and that happens usually between two sides of a given subject... in this case, religion vs. ... oh let's call it naturalism. i'm sure you'll want to call it atheism, but let it be noted that i have not once referred to myself as an atheist. you however, have most certainly referred to yourself as a Christian. :Saint:

James, I never said I wasn't a Christian. And I also love to study all major belief systems, philosophies, or whatever we shall call them...including "naturalism", humanism...almost anything, because I find it fascinating and think there is always something that can be learned. And I am by no means a saint (nor do I wish to be). This makes me no better or no worse than anyone else. But this is WELL off my point, which you know. I only pointed out that many people like to assert their beliefs and try to convince others they are wrong, and asked why? You may call this "debate". But a debate is between two willing parties (or more). When someone says "I believe in ...whatever"...and someone else comes along and says "you're wrong and wasting your time and energy in believing in this, and it's all a load of crap"....that's not a debate if the other person didn't ask for a discussion. It's just being disrespectful, and being a bit of a bully. So, I come back (for the last time) to my original point which seems to be avoided, and ask "why?" Why not instead, "well...I don't agree with your beliefs, and don't really understand how you can believe that...but to each his own"?

oh for fuck's sake.

never-fucking-mind then, tender-arse... have your self-serving interpretations of my intentions if you like... this IS a FORUM however, and if you post your opinions you need to expect to have them discussed, and even challenged... and not just agreed with or noted. that's called debate in the public square, jeebus titty-fk'n-Xst.

oh.. and i still love you :Saint:, even though no book i recognize tells me i have to, ;)

No more self-serving than your interpretations of my intentions. I'm sorry James if I'm a "tender-arse". I'm not trying to be a pain in the ass (well, not TOO much of one ;) ). Open discussion is great, and should be thought provoking. And, I stated my opinion as well. But the only answer I've gotten is "expect this to happen". That's not much of an answer. That's like when you ask a parent "why?" and they say "because I said so".

I guess let's all just have a warm/fuzzy-group hug moment and move on to better things.

never-mind that you're talking in circles that don't intersect my points of discussion at all... so be it.. you don't wanna debate. 'nuff said.

party pooper.

anyway, i don't recalling declaring any "interpretations of your intentions". i merely noted that you were declaring yourself a christian, while disavowing pretty much all the trappings. i found that interesting and engaged in an attempt to have a non-personal debate to draw out your reasoning for maintaining that X-tian tag, in the face of your obvious distaste for the framework within which people who normally refer to themselves with that monicker usually live their lives. you chose to avoid the discussion and frame the attempt as an attack. you go, guy. :kickass:

I'm just about to leave work ( 3 hours to late..) but I'll respond tonight on this whole post :)

Anyhow, no man, I know it's not personal. In real life I'd still shake your hand, or any of the other guys on here. Everybody is entitled to their own opinion and thoughts! A forum, especially this off-topic part, is meant for discussion, fun stuff etc.etc. As long as there's respect at the end of the discussion for eachother it's all good. And both you and I know, we won't be able to change eachothers' mind but it's always interesting discussing/debating with eachother about our "differences", that's what makes everybody unique...

now you're talkin' sense, ;)

You know, Christians ALWAYS say this during debates, but I've never really entered any sort of discussion with the mentality that I wouldn't try to learn or understand the other side. Isn't that the point of debate? I know that I am far more happy losing a debate than winning; I learn nothing if I win, but if I lose, then I've discarded a false idea to search for a newer, more correct idea.

In this case, please accept my sincere and honest apologies to you then, sir. I completely mistook/misread your intentions.
