What do you guys think about it?
I mean almost everyone here is surely a fan of a 90's or newer band that has its forum hosted herein.
But other than some mentions to old school bands in some favorite asking thread, every word is about these new bands (not unjustified though).

So?

well, the first metal band I heard in my life was Twisted Sister (I where about 7 years old) .. andI fell in lov
then i started listening to Alice Copper, Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden... so metal has ben a part of me all my life :goggly:
so, well...

I used to listen to Def Leppard and Guns 'N Roses, then a friend introduced me to Anthrax in 1988. I was blown away. I immediately got into Metallica, Megadeth, Testament, Sacred Reich, Flotsam and Jetsam, etc. I'm not much into anything earlier than said bands, but I do appreciate the influence they provided for the bands I love. Some old Iron Maiden stuff is cool, but I don't like enough of it to buy their CDs....maybe a compilation. I only own like 5 cds prior to 1987, and most of them are Rush, which isn't really metal (though some would argue that). So, for me, "Classic" heavy metal is the late 80s stuff. The best of those bands are definitely Forbidden, Sacred Reich, Testament, Metallica (pre black album), Flotsam and Jetsam, Megadeth, Overkill, and Vio-Lence. I could keep naming bands, but I feel like I should shut up. I'm not saying the older metal (Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, etc) sucks by any means, it just isn't my preferred style of metal.

I will just name some of the albums you are missing (given the fact that you don't own/propably don't like very much metal behind '87):
Jag Panzer - "Tyrants" EP, "Ample Destruction"
Cirith Ungol - their first three albums
Priest
Sabbath with DIO
Rainbow with DIO
the three first FATES WARNING albums
the four first Queensryche Albums
the first...
nah! forget it! the list is veeeeeeerrrrrryyyyyy looooooonnnnnngggg dude! (Armored Saint, Liege Lord, Siren, Helloween, Rage, Running Wild).

Just remember that you should at least listen to these shit. It fucking kicks ass!

About RUSH, man they rock. I don't know if they are metal or not, but they surely are the fathers of progressive metal!

Thanks for the suggestions. I have listened to most of what you suggest, but I will make sure to check out those I haven't. I really should've said prior to 1984 instead of 1987. I do like early Fates Warning, Watchtower, Candlemass, and a few others. I'm not saying that metal before '84 is bad, far from it, I think it was a necessary precursor to set up the music I love. It just isn't my bag, much the same way that most black and death metal isn't. I recognize their influence and talent, but I just prefer to listen to something else. The only metal I would ever rip on is nu-metal (or hip-hop metal, rap metal, or whatever you wanna call it). Nothing like taking one of the worst forms of music and combining it with the best. Why bring something great down to mediocrity? That I'll never understand. So, I preach peace to early metal fans and death to nu-metallers

As far as I'm concerned - Led Zeppelin started it all.

Of course, I've heard people say Jimi Hendrix started metal, but I'll stick with Zep.

when i was young i used to love all the Iron Maiden, Metallica, Mega death etc stuff, but i cant stand it now, i respect a lot of the bands as they influenced bands i love. but i just dont like them anymore, bar about a handful of memorable songs.

I agree. And they also started drop d tuning
I say Black Sabbath started heavy and Judas Priest started Metal.
But remember you have to be more than heavy to be metal...

@_Transparent_ What you say is very true. And you are very respected for that. It is very much better to say "I don't like, but i respect", than to say "I am metalduddy and mr metalknowall and metal exists from 1969 and died in 1988". Good thinking dude (even though I do like old stuff like crazy)

As far as the "who started it all" i think it was the guy who invented electricity (don't rememb... hmmm, don't know the name).
