"Coldest" Black Metal Band?

"Definitely Immortal. I think that De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas is a pretty cold sounding album actually."

Am I mistaken or is this a Mayhem album?

Obviously, we have different opinions on what the word "cold" means. For instance, DMDS to me could actually be said to be a "warm" recording. The sound is thick, the vocals low & creepy, etc...

Regardless, cold black metal follows:

Ildjarn
Nidhogg
Darkthrone
Anaal Nathrakh
Krieg
Bathory (first three recordings, especially Under The Sign of the Black Mark)
Craft
Lugubrum
Gorgoroth

All joking aside I think either Darkthrone or Mayhem. I have a really hard time listening to Mayhem sometimes because of the atmosphere it sets. I don't know but it isn't something I want to feel every day.

I never found Craft to be particularly cold, especially the newest album, but as you said we all have different opinions on what cold means.

The atmosphere created by bands such as Darkthrone and Mayhem is amazing, it kind of takes you on a mental journey through the ice-ridden mountains of Norway...pretty surreal

Too bad Darkthrone's newest EP or whatever negates any type of sincerity they were striving for in their earlier stuff.

Edit: Damnit I was trying to stay at 169 posts.

Epheles, for some reason sounds really cold to me. Their weird ambient intros create like this sound you would not find really out of place in an ice cavern, had someone made an literal audio track of one anyways.

That graphic about the tootsie pops is absolutely hilarious. Thanks for making my morning.

Blizzard Beasts - Definitely!

Battles in the North also, but Blizzard is far colder.

Truely, Immortal are so cold, I can't listen them in the summer time. It is just strange. I can't imagine how people listen Immortal in Mexico or Brasil. It's just weird. :)

Hahahaha. I always feel funny if I'm listening to any Black Metal in the daylight, when the sun's shining and happy. Very strange. Usually I listen to it on rainy dark days or at night. Anyone else or am I just anal?
