Collective questions for Mr. Sneap -thread

Hi Andy
Does your farm have bedrooms or a little appartment for the bands?

Look at it! It's like a mansion or some shit...

Here's one I don't think has been asked..

How much of your sound do you think is your skill as an AE and how much do you think is in the gear? Would you be able to produce almost similar quality mixes if you were given a POD, DFHS, a Firepod and a few SM57's?
I'm sure the folks over at Gearslutz would be offended I even asked, but the people here seem to produce pretty damn good stuff with subpar equipment, I'm wondering what you think on that issue.

Welcome back Andy :) Here is a summarized post of the questions:

- How do you get subdrops to have the weight and pronounciation without messing shit up when going through the master bus comp etc?
- What would you say are the most common mistakes with the engineering of material you've seen coming from some more inexperienced engineers and musicians?
- How do you pan guitars?
- Do you use autotune and/or melodyne or some other pitch correcting software?
- Do you use stereowidening or mid/side processing on anything?

sub drops are gay, just say no!

bad overhead edits, no micing of ride and china, distorted vocals.

Pan gtrs hard left and right normally.

I have waves tune, auto tune and melodyne, which get used when needed.

I dont tend to use any stereowidening unless as an effect.

And on double tracks?

2.guitar 1 100% L /double guitar 1 75% L / guitar 2 100% R/ double guitar 2 75% R

he said he used : 100% and 80% with the 80s few dbs quiter :

Front : Guitar 1 100R Guitar 2 100L
Back : Guitar 3 80R Guitar 4 80L

about the panning of the 4 guitars, it depends on the song part itself, the songwriting i guess. but you do that during tracking usually.

for instance, based on previous experiences, if the riff is harmonized (so 2 part, the root and the harmony), I would track Part#1 on 100R and 80L, and Part#2 on 100L and 80R. Like this the harmony is spread over the stereo. You can also have Part#1 fully on the right and Part#2 fully on the left.

It depends the effect/sound you want to create.

BUT don't put 1 harmony on 100R&100L and the other on 80R&80L. you'll to have the 80's as loud as the 100's and thats not the best thing to do imo.

I have a couple of questions I have been dying to ask a full time Producer like Mr Sneap.
Just to let you know I am recording my band currently and our style is a mix of bands such as - Between the buried and me/suicide silence/bring me the horizon/architects. (just thought i would let you know the style as this may be a factor in your answers to my questions.

1. What do you use as an interface for the guitar to go in and to the computer. (I am currently using a POD XT Pro which is connected to the Mac via USB, is that going to produce good enough sound quality? If not what do I need. (Cost isn't an issue)

2. What interface is good all round? I am currently using the Presonus Firestudio Project for Drums/Vocals. It is pretty Crap. I have had to Tweak the shit out of the drums using Drumagog and several inserts to make the drums sound beefy and full. I need something with at least 8 Inputs and something that give me Top end sound quality.

Thanks for your help, Really like your work.
