Do you drive your mic pre's hard (into distortion) to include some nice harmonic content and then attenuate before hitting the Converter's (so you don't clip them), or do like to use the pre's "clean"?

Here's a question I've always wondered ever since I had the opportunity to record and listen to a Royer R121. To my ears, the Royer smokes the sm57 so I've always been kinda curious if Andy has ever tried one and compared it to the 57. Just wondering because he seems very partial to the 57. I know everyone to each his own, but maybe Andy thinks it's too dark dark or doesn't have the mids to cut through or whatever reason. I know he favored the 57 to an Audix i5.
So Andy, if you don't mind my asking, what are your thoughts on a Royer R121 vs an SM57?
