Collective questions for Mr. Sneap -thread

I think with vocals its down to good compression. I'm a big fan of the distressor, the dbx 160 is pretty good too. Theres no standard eq. As far as bass and Gtrs sitting together, thats called tight playing and good mixing, theres no secret to that either I'm afraid, its all down to the recorded tone. I'd def recommend recording gtrs first tho so you can get a bass tone that sits in the right place.

1) What would you say is the most common mistake made by the D.I.Y producer when recording micing setting the amp tone with guitars and bass from clips you've heard over the years ?
2) how much depends on tracking apposed to EQ applied at mix down? I guess this depends on how well the session goes?!
3) Was there ever a moment when you discovered a giant leap forward in tracking , EQ ing, mixing the back line?

I don't know if this has been asked before, so feel free to slap me if it has, but Andy have you gained knowledge yourself from the guys on here? Have you adopted any techniques or anything that you saw someone here mention?

Hello Mr. Sneap, one question (maybe two). I know you use/used alesis d4 snare smaples to layer on snare tracks. Do you prefer the mono/dry or the stereo/reverb ones? And do you use much post processing (hardcore compression and eqing) on them? I own a d4, but can´t find a decent one except the fat city and maybe one other. If this is the holy grail of your snare sound please ignore this question:) thanks.

Here are the questions compiled from the last 5 months:

1 - where do you usually lowcut the bass?
2 - which one do you usually mix lower, bass or kick?
3 - as you get to try some of the 'new toys' in the market (like the Dave Mustaine signature cab for example), what has been one of those that you have purchased after trying or are seriously considered to get? And do have any endorsement deals?
4 - When you build your new studio, did you call some specialized companies to do the works on it or did you do some works by yourself?
5 - You have spoken before about your OH's, generally about placement and micing; is there anything else you are doing to achieve that seperation you get?
6 - do you keep the guitar cab in a big live room or a small dry one?
7 - Do you find yourself 'fixing' a lot of stuff in the mix, or are your recordings so damn good that you don't have to?
8 - On the recent video posted you mentioned bringing the rhythm guitars down during the solo. Do you do that during heavy vocal parts too?
9 - How much time do you usually use with an album?
10 - Do you ever use 2x12's or only exclusively 4x12's?
11 - What snare drum/s (brand and model) are we hearing in most of your mixes? Do you prefer a particular one/type or do you just make every snare that comes into your studio sound epic?
12 - How hot do you crank amps for recording?
13 - What you do with trigger signal to avoid double triggering problem?
14 - How do you choose the crossover frequencies on your master multi-band comp?
15 - What would you say is the most common mistake made by the beginner producer when recording guitars and bass?
16 - Have you gained knowledge yourself from this forum? If yes, what?
17 - How hot do you track in general? (peak/rms)

ok , ive been kinda busy but here goes to that last bunch.
1. low cut on bass, no rules, depends what it needs, use your ears.
2. bass or kick lower in the mix? I don't look at mixes like that, I fit both in where I feel they should be.
3.I have endorsements with alot of companies, last thing I paid for was API A2D to use with my 002 abroad.
4.I did most of the work myself and used recording architecture in London who did ub40 and ac/dcs studio, very cool guys and they just helped with a few control room acoustics.
5. nope, dont do any miracles tho I do mute china, ride, small splashes and hats when not played.
6. Cab is in an average sized room with no close reflections
7.my recordings are just fine....usually
8.no usually just solos as they are in the same freq range
9.depends, some we finish in a month , others like megadeth take 5 months (over a 9 month period) depends on the band
10. 4x12s mostly, 2x12 for some clean stuff
11. We'll I dont record all the snares you hear so I guess you just like what I do with it, compression verb etc.
12. I find a sweet spot, the power amp reacts differently at volume, its usually a touch quieter than you'd use in rehearsal.
13. I use drum rehab and go through and check for mistriggers and delete
14. with my ears
15.too much eq and not listening to the sound at source, also not knowing what they want
16.I learnt about DKFH and impulses
17. I record at a correct level, no clipping

Thanks for answering Andy.
I remember you once posted a list of amps and cabs you owned, but I'm not sure if you listed any 2x12s you use.
Would you be able to compile the most up to date list of amps and cabs you currently have available? I remember you saying a while backing you sold a Randall T2 cos it didn't do it for you
