Curious about Evergrey

I think Carina summed it well when she referred to Evergrey as "romantic" metal... though not "romantic" in the "love" sense...

I also think it's a bit gothic... but not in the "goth rock" sense

its like power but without being gay. i think recreation day is awesome. totally listenable and with loads of killer guitar solos, not the wanky kind at all. good rocking out in your car music. elevates you to monster truck status.

I consider them dark prog metal without getting too over the top. Very different from the majority of the acts out there.
What is so "prog" about Evergrey?

In my opinion nothing.

No long songs, no (or very very few) odd-time signatures, no mixing of genres...

And even no "progressing" from album to album, if you listen to
The Dark Discovery, you can very easily hear Recreation Day...

Even Tom. S Englund don't call themselves prog and seems to
dislike that title (taken from the Swedish Radio P3 interview)...

Beth...in reponse to your question, I did write that Recreation Day review credited to UM on the official site.

Why didn't you PM me back? You're lucky I came back here :p

@everyone else: I tried to download a song, but I only got a clip. I didn't really like it :erk:
Maybe I should give it another shot? It just sounded like cheesy power metal to me...the whole 40 seconds of it...

Which song? They tend to run the gamut; if you tell us which one you heard, someone can give you a better example at the non-cheese end of the spectrum. (fortunately, there's considerably more of the latter than the forumer)

I have absolutely no idea what song it was. Sorry for my lame description (and it was kind of a joke--I knew that, more than likely, they weren't "cheesy power metal"). But I didn't get to hear enough to make a judgment for myself.

If anyone has a link to a song you think I should hear, I'll download it. But I don't even have Kazaa, so that may be a problem (I'm not the downloading type). But I'll take any suggestions.

Getting pretty much any song from Recreation Day is a good idea. They're all quite good. "Your Darkest Hour", "Visions", "Recreation Day", and "As I Lie Here Bleeding" are all good songs from said album. Also, Evergrey in general produce some of the better melodic solos in metal, which is probably a selling point for a lot of their fans (like me).

I agree. I also like The Great Deceiver, as well though. Speaking of which, does anyone know where I can find the lyrics to that song?
