What a stunning piece of work. Bursts of melody, technical riffs without wankery, and his best vocals ever. I've been listening to it a lot lately and I'll go so far as to say it's the best Death album!!!

I agree with everything except the part "its the best Death album". That would be "Individual Thought Patterns" or "Symbolic".
*me* lucky enough to see Death performing live in September 1998 \m/

really? While I'm not a fan of Death at all, I found TSoP to be extremely wankery, and I hated the vocals.

I always liked Human.

I've heard every Death album, and I just couldn't get into the band. They never did release that one true masterpiece like Carcass or even Morbid Angel did. I will always hold the band in the highest respects, though.

I've never cared to understand the vocalist. That's what lyric sheets are for.

A technically superb album, and a fitting swansong for a musician who refused to repeat himself and set out to improve upon his previous work each time. I'm sure the elitists will disagree, but there's room for all opinions, no matter how far removed from fact.

That's because these are the only two death metal bands that ever released masterpieces. :Spin:

Is Sound of Perserverance markedly different from Individual Thought Patterns? I love that album but don't need something real similar. Symbolic is terrible. Chuck's vocals are ehhh... at best.

That's it. It's like you listen to all the Death albums you can feel all the best elements coming together right at the end with their last album. I used to think that "Individual Thought Patterns" was their best, but in truth, I think I just fell for the 'dream team' lineup. As songs go, the stuff on SoP just seems to fall together quite nicely, and "Voice of the Soul" is filled with emotion to the brim. And I really didn't realize how great a drummer Richard Christy was...

Ever heard of Nile, Pestilence, or Melechesh you bastid? :tickled:

It's just more emotional. That's all I can say. Just beautiful set pieces of guitar wizardry intertwined with these literal 'bursts' of melodic fireworks. Yes, ITP has that also, but not to the same extent.

Symbolic is terrible. Chuck's vocals are ehhh... at best.
Yes I agree. Symbolic is way too wanky for me, but I guess prog-heads would dig it.

His vocals on SoP are remarkably different to those on ITP etc. He lost all that gruff harshness and almost turned it into a high pitched growl that was still very coherent. I don't want to fucking sit there and be tied to a lyric sheet, I want to be able to listen to something like this in the car and appreciate the lyrical genius coming out the speakers by hanging on to his every word. I don't know if this was his illness setting in or what, but there is something very endearing about his vocal performance on SoP.

You think that Symbolic is wanky and SOP is not? I dont get it.
I dont think that SOP is wanky.. or anything like this, i love it. But i find strange how you can think that Symbolic is wanky since SOP is more technical and less heavy. More melodic probably too.

Oh ok, let me explain, but you just pointed out the key difference - it's "more melodic". I do, however, recognize that there are a billion riff changes on SoP. The big difference is that each riff has it's own core hook. I mean, just how amazing is that? It's quite remarkable where other bands write an entire song based on one or two riffs with hooks, and Chuck could just throw them out once in a verse and never look back.

Symbolic seemed to not have as many hooks, so it becomes quite convoluted at times, and the technical mastery begins to overshadow any emotion that might be hidden deep within those riff crevasses. In other words, Symbolic doesn't offer much for me to hang on to.

I really need to pay more attention then, what I remember is boring riffs and poor songwriting. It's been some years.

Alright, I'm sold on this. Probably won't pick it up for awhile unless Choadlumbia House has it for cheap.

Of course I can rip you a CD-R, but you haven't even listened to my last batch yet. :loco:

I'm not at all surprised that others have their own Death favourite album (because each release was so unique), but I'd be curious to see if anyone disagrees with my assessment of the album itself? That will probably help you decide further on whether you think it's a worthwhile buy or not, but I really do think it's quite stunning.

I brought Orphaned Land to work with me today, it's going on next! :D Also after matt99 sends his batch of CD-Rs my way I want it all cut off. I'm approaching triple digits right now and that's ridiculous! I predict next year just buying proper copies of the CD-Rs I enjoy. 2005 will have to be put on pause.

Any way you slice it, I need more Death. I'll pick up either this or Human in the not-so-soon future.

i personally have always preferred Human over the rest. Yet one thing I can say for certain is that Human is their landmark album. Also in my opinion I dont care for anytihng after human because of the wankery. Id much rather listen to Spritual Healing or Human.

I have the whole Death catalog and while I truely enjoy it all ... my fave is still Leprosy ... the jump in songwritting quality from Scream Bloody Gore to Leprosy was astounding.

Only one other band did something similar ... Sepultura going from Morbid Visions to Schizophrenia to Beneath ... but they went down the shitter afterwards.

Death will always be one of my faves.

Try to get your hands on the Live In Eindhoven DVD.

BTW ... all of you know that Richard Christy is now a full time guy on the Howard Stern show ....
