yeah.. like Kazrog says, no need for that with a mac Powerbook.. already built in. my 17" model has one FW400 and one FW800 right between the USB 2.0 and ethernet connectors on the right side.

No f*cking sh%t?!! that's amazing...OK, I've stayed out of the whole PC vs. Mac discussion--even though I'm a non-partisan PC guy--but that clearly puts Mac in front, the whole firewire thing. Wow, I had no idea.

yep...

tight james thanks...checked out powerbooks today at fry's...not gonna get one now, but down the line that built in firewire looks pretty sweet...I'm guessing PC laptops (is that what they're called?) don't have firewire, yah?

They do. I have a FW400 port on my PC laptop, but no FW800 (have to buy a PCMCIA card for that, as you mentioned earlier).

I honestly forgot Sonar and SawStudio. My apologies to users of those platforms. However, I am not aware of any pro studios or artists using either platform, so I am biased in that regard.

Screw the mainstream - I'm with Sonar (and yes I paid for it!). It suits my workflow. I've tried some of the other DAWs over the years but couldn't get into them like with the Cakewalk programs.
At this stage in DAWs evolution, I'm of the opinion that they all pretty much do the same thing, only with a different front end - which off course, is extremely subjective.

BTW there are plenty of "pro" users. Check the Cakewalk and Saw websites.

I know very little about firewire. What's the difference between FW400 and FW800?
FW400 is the most common firewire protocol ... it's the one we all use for external Hard drives, iPods, DV cams, etc. etc. it's bus speed is 400mbps (megabits per second). FW800 is available on all macs now, and it's bus speed is 800mbps and it is backwards compatible with FW400 devices. also, in case you wondered USB 1.1, which is the USB we have all used for years, runs at a little over 12mbps.. USB 2.0, which is rapidly becoming the USB standard, runs at 480mbps... actually faster then FW400. FW800 is awesomely fast. i have a LaCie 500GB FW800 drive that just blazes.

it is just like Brett said, laptop pcs have fw 400.
I have a pcmcia card that gives me fw 800. It is useful when using my external hard-disk

There's a lot of new people here. Time to see what everyone's recording with. I myself use Digital Performer most of the time, but my producer uses Pro Tools, so I have one foot in both platforms. Thus I've allowed multiple selections in my poll, just in case anybody else is similarly splintered.

i was wondering something: can you use pro tools without a keyboard thingy ?

I've been a PT user for a long time but DP looks better all the time.
Now here's my question:
how many of you Nuendo users actually paid for it?

I did. Not a big fan of stealing.
But that was version 1 off eBay, and with the ri-frickin-DICULOUS prices they're charging now for the upgrades, I may have to change platforms. No way I can pay more to upgrade than I paid to buy the software in the first place. Screw Steinberg. Like I said, not a big fan of stealing (on either side--including charging ridiculous prices for software). :tickled:

Yeah that was sort of my point.....$2k seems pretty damn high relative to the competing software.

How much is the update from SX 1 to 3?

I paid $300 (or was it $600?) i think for my emagic logic 6 platinum to apple logic 7 pro update, and that included a shitload of plugs and software instruments so i wasn't too unhappy with paying it.

Hey Matt, what's that avatar ??? :err: :dopey:
that would be Larry Bird of the legendary late 80's-early 90's line-up of the Boston Celtics NBA team. Together with Kevin McHale they made up the most vertical footage of "white boy" than any other team could lay claim to.

I have the very same Mac (I'm typing on it right now)!!!

Bought in 2003, NEVER totally crashed, only minor disfunctions in some application (like Microsoft Word and occasionally the internet 56k connection but it happens only when i connect to internet after stopping and reviving the computer...).

LOL. I like the implication here: Macs don't crash....and if they do it's microsofts fault.
