Esthal - deep under forests alive...
All the time i read about Dead Can Dance.
People have their album-covers as avatars and they are praised.
But i still do not really know what style of music they play.
I heard something about Gothic, i also heard about some kind of soundtrack music with folkloric elements.
Now what is this band about, and which album by them, if any at all, should i buy?

Defining DCD is pretty impossible because their music has been influenced by music from everywhere from Europe to Asia to Africa to the Mid East, as well as gothic rock. Over time the gothic rock influence died down and the World influences increased. Their sound is further complexified by the fact that they have two very different vocalists. Brendan Perry has a strong swooning voice along the lines of a more gothic Jim Morrison, while Lisa Gerrad, well her voice is pretty much beyond description. I'll just say it's the most powerful and moving voice I've ever heard, in any form of music.

As far as which album to try out, I'd suggest "Within the Realm of a Dying Sun" which is possibly my favorite album ever. It's gothic in the true sense.

"Aion" and "The Serpent's Egg" are also suggested, both of which are heavily influenced by European/Rennocance music...

Well, metal is starting to have a greater worldbeat element to it, and groups like DCD certainly are helping that along.

They're very eclectic, and I love ethnocentric music, so \m/.

I like The Serpent's Egg and Spiritchaser.

Music fans worldwide remember or think of them as a Goth band.. so your better off getting their "Goth" albums.. I dont have any of their CD's .. just a sample CD of songs from various albums.. i like them.. and eventually will get one of their albums... :)

Hmm, perhaps i should better get Serpent's Egg then (the description sounds interesting), because "gothic in the true sense" makes me somehow sceptical, because i do not like Gothic Rock very much.

Sorry for posting this topic in the wrong forum, but as described in the initial post, i do not know anything sure about the genre of Dead can Dance - and because everyone likes them i thought it might be fitting to post it here.

My policy for the time-being is that non-controversial non-metal threads may as well be left here, seeing as the definition of the forum is somewhat ambiguous and the non-metal forum fairly useless anyway.

Like I've said before, DCD are minimalist gothic world music neofolk medieval music with neoclassical elements ;)

Check out Aion, in particular. I have four or five of their albums and Aion is my favourite of those.

Well when I say "gothic in the true sense" I mean as in the era, you know several hundered years back, there really isn't much rock influence at all. Still "Serpents Egg" is a great starting point as well...

You guys and your labels. Dead Can Dance defy labels and genres thank god. They are sort of a mix between classical, electronic, and whatever folk genre the album is going for; be it African, or Native American, Medieval etc. Are they gothic--what is gothic? Is it because they have darker shades to their music, or is it gothic, in a truly historical sense; not a modern sense.

I'm guessing historically gothic, as was pointed out.

And if you like their music, don´t miss them on their upcoming tour! (If their concerts aren´t already sold out.) To get an impression of what to expect, check out their live-video "Toward The Within" (I think it has also been released on DVD by now - at least the DVD was included in the "1981-1998"-box). Also try Lisa Gerrard´s solo albums, especially the debut "The Mirror Pool".
