I would say Dimebag because it happened recently...
That and he really was an average talent...

I'll agree with that simply because he wasn't the innovator like Rhoads or Hendrix, yet he was a very talented guitarist. The fact that people showed such an outpouring was because he was such a strong personality, such a great spokesman for metal and the guitar, and because of the violent nature of his death. I think people made a much bigger deal over Dime than SRV. Hey, they're all tragic and great losses.

If you can say that about Dimebag, then in reality SRV is in the same boat, he bit off of Hendrix SO much, He wrote good songs and was the best at what he did but he also wasn't a innovator.

No one of these you have mentioned.
These are all my favourite guitarists and all of them are pretty innovative, Dimebag and Stevie Ray being right up there...

None of those. I'm a huge Pantera fan, and some of the riff's Dime came up with were crushing (Slaughtered anyone! :headbang:). Randy was nothing short of awesome, one of the best shreadders to ever pick up the axe. SRV was also killer, and what else is there to say about Hendrix that hasn't been said?

If anyone, I'd say Kurt Cobain was the most overrated.

I do have to ask this about Randy. If Ozzy/Sharon hadn't spent so much energy pounding Randy's image and playing into us. Would we still revere him as an innovator? After Randy died, Shozzy came up with almost as many recording of him as they have for Tupac. Maybe I am being objective and maybe I am just bagging on him because Ozzy and Sharon disgust me.

I wouldn't call Dime overrated either. He isn't the most talented on that list but, he definitaly had feel. I would credit Pantera and Dime with keeping metal relevant during the age of grunge. That in itself makes him worthy of the list.

Agreed..he was the least innovative...his music was chewed up and spit out Hendrix tossed with Texas blues...he had a touch of his own flavor, and I think people feel he did something new when in fact he just brought the styles to some level of popularity.

I think that he was at his best when he played straight out blues. His tone was untouchable. No one, but none has nailed that tone, the closest has been Kenny Wayne Sheppard. Another one with a great tone is Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top!

I hate to say it, but I would have to give the nod to Dime also. Naturally, it is hard to pick a "worst of the best" so to speak - but I honestly never really cared that much for his playing(or Pantera in general to be honest), aside from a few exceptional riffs and a song or two.
In fairness though, it might be safe to say that all of them are overrated to some degree. Once an entertainer hits that "legend" status, they often assume a sort of mythological greatness that may or may not actually reflect their abilities or impact.
Ultimately, all those listed were excellent and several waayyy ahead of their time in many regards. Still, the inevitable, postumous hype-machine tends to blow things out of proportion after a time. I dunno, it's all pretty subjective...maybe it really just depends who you like more:p

Completely agree with this. The amount of kids acting like he was a messiah in my high school when he died was sickening. On the subject of the poll, I like all the guitar players listed so I am not going to choose.
Exactly, which brings me back to Dime. 1994 was the year Nirvana was like the hottest shit, and everyone was trying to copy the grunge sound. That was also the same year Pantera released "Far Beyond Driven" and it debued at number fucking 1, no doubt the most aggressive and heavy album to do so. That says a lot about that band, and the fans.

Cabrones, how the hell did Kurt Cobain get in on this thread?! Fuck him! Though I think SOD were fans as they covered Territorial Pissings...
Cobain was more of performer songwriter, he wasn't a skilled guitarist...

IMO Kobain was a piece of shit period, but that is my opinion.
