Hello everyone,
Since there's a topic regarding the most underrated metal guitarists, I felt it would be pretty cool if we could all discuss whom we think are the most overrated metal guitarists.

IMO it's Michael Angelo Batio. I love his stuff, ie. technique. But it is apparent that he can get very, very monotonous at times. His cliched Neo-classical sound gives me a headache. It does alter some people's views on the Neo-classical genre to an extent, you know. The only song I dig would be "No Boundaries".:) But just listen to his instrumental version of Aerosmith's "Dream On", he basically raped the song with those aimless sweeps and runs and blah.:yuk:

Hmmm...Fair enough on Michael Angelo Batio being overrated, but I think I may have a better one. Two words: Kirk Hammett.

Kirk Hammett and Zakk Wylde instantly come to mind.
They are always on front covers of magazines but neither has brought anything new to the table ever. "But Kirk was in the most influential thrash band ever", but it was James that wrote the badass riffs. "Enter Sandman?" you say, but that doesn't count because that song sucks, that riff is mediocre and that album was when the band started to go seriously downhill IMHO, so as far as I'm concerned Kirk can't write for shit.
Kirk Hammett is just even worse, because he has been playing guitar for longer than I've been alive and his vibrato has not improved in that time. The dude makes me look like I have Yngwie Malmsteens vibrato control in comparison and I've been playing since 2005.
How on earth you get lessons from Joe Satriani, one of the most brilliant and talented players ever and yet suck horribly is beyond comprehension.
Joe Satriani = Good phrasing, good vibrato, bends in tune, does not butcher his solos live, knows how to construct a solo, has an ear for memorable and creative melodies, has amazingly clean and accurate technique and his general command of his playing is top notch. His playing also improved over the years. He is extremely tasteful in his playing.

Kirk Hammett= Cannot phrase for shit, has the intonation of someone that has been playing for about 4 weeks, every second bend is out of tune, he butchers his own solos live and covers up his slop with wah wah pedals despite the fact half the solos originally didn't use a wah, does not have a good ear for constructing solos well. His playing is absolutely tasteless.
The most embarrassing aspect is that the few solos that James Hetfield has played on the studio records are better than anything Kirk Hammett has done combined.
When your rhythm guitarist has a better sense of melody, better vibrato, a better knowledge of constructing solos properly and is actually tasteful in his approach to solos compared to you, you should realize that you're one shit lead guitarist.

I think Petrucci is a phenomenal guitarist but I also think he is really boring.

I love the stuff he did on Images and Words, as well as Awake.
I don't feel a lot of passion left in his playing on the recent records though, it comes across as forced to me.

I'd agree with every single post up there!
Malmsteen - yeh, yeh, when he started off it was something of "awe-fuckin-some", but the guy just ruined his image by doing the same stuff over and over again. With every goddamn song, every goddamn album. Zakk's a Randy Rhoads Wannabe. Kirk Hammet - erm, he basically does not have a musical mind.
Regarding Petrucci, he has got some talent. He has done some amazing stuff. But the 'some' word is what fucks him up. If you notice, he cant make his solos jump on a 'static rhythm'. C'mon man, it becomes fuckin easy for anyone to make their solos spicy when theirs a shift of feel in the rhythm. And that gets fuckin cheesy, if not implemented in a proper way. Look at the Painkiller solo, and most JP stuff - now that's the shit. Tipton and Downing knows 'what to say'. Hmm and back to dt we can't expect proper + metal standard implementations with those keyboardists *ahem, the new bald one. but that's off topic* So yeh, basically:

Petrucci's too obsessed about theory and apparently he's also bad at theory. *Read above*. A confused musician, I would say who tries to impress the audience by speed and/or Kenny G + Aladin and his Magic Carpet phrases. Simply put, he's narrow-minded towards his musical expressions. You get the point... I wonder what Stevie Ray Vaughan, up there in a cloud of his own thinks of him.

He just got lucky with Images and Words, enough said.

Edit: A7X jokers and Adam D - *facepalm* and *megalolzzz at them*

lol that video is hilarious. I agree he might be overrated.

I don't however agree about Kirk or Zakk being overrated. They are good solid players and were really influential in the early 90's and I think everyone here knows that they're limited in their abilities so they can't really be overrated. I'd say they're rated just right :) Maybe slightly overrated by non-musicians and kids but I'm sure there are much better candidates such as the dragonforce guys.

there's "betya cant play this" with herman ree...he's fucking up so badly there it's not even funny.
and ontheir albums it doesn't even sound "recorded slow played back fast" it actually sounds like they're chopping the solo into all the seperate notes and putting them back together in time. like 100% quantized
