Most Overrated Metal Guitarists?

Whoa whoa whoa, Alexi's vocals may be...questionable (I really like 'em though, in a goofy ridiculous way) and he may be sloppy live, but man has he written some fantastic solos, and I think he's incredibly identifiable as a player! No, sorry, completely disagree, I love his playing and consider him a huge influence; EVEN if the solo sections in "Mask of Sanity" and "Kissing the Shadows" were punched-in to all hell to get them that tight, he still wrote them, and they're excellent examples of speed with feel; I can't say enough positive things about the guy's solos and riffs, and I think most people know that I've got enough solo'ing chops to be able to know what I'm talking about and put my money where my mouth is ;) I love Bodom!

And Jess, how is Chris Broderick overrated? Otherwise, though, I will have to piss many people off by giving a +1 to Randy Rhoads, I've honestly never really seen what was so impressive about his solo'ing, and before anyone says how ahead of it's time it was, EVH IMO is MUCH more identifiable and uniquely awesome, and VH1 came out in like '78! Same with Glenn Tipton and George Lynch, to name a couple more. However, even though I really REALLY do not like Pantera or even Dimebag's style of playing, I still acknowledge what a great, charismatic guitarist he was, so I wouldn't say he's overrated. And Petrucci has been a huge influence on me as well, so that's a -1 there too. ;)

i'm not ripping on alexi's writing man, because i agree with you completely that he has written some of the most melodic and influencial solos of our time, i'm just saying the next time I see some post-hardcore fucking fag start praising him for all the wrong reasons, i'm going to dropkick him in the fucking teeth. chris broderick on the other hand.. well, here.

i'm sorry but even if it was against loomis, half the shredders on this board could do 10x better than that.. he may be able to write, but good god he cannot improvise anything worth shit.

Irrespective of your own abilities and influences, the issue is still a subjective one. People are very much allowed to vocalize their distaste for Alexi.

I used to be a huge fan back in high school, but I look back now and cringe. There are so many better role models out there for all aspects of music, not just guitar playing.

^

But seriously, Randy can not be overrated. Nor can Dimebag ffs. Before he died there was nothing but love for him, why make it change now we've lost him.

Avenged Sevenfold
Kirk Hammet
Dave Mustaine
Chris Broderick
Dimebag (Sorry, but he died a few years ago, and really wasn't as great as people put on. Let it fucking go.)
Michael Angelo Batio
John Petrucci
Slash
Michael Amott
Rusty Cooley
Alexi Laiho
LAMB OF GOD :)Puke::puke::puke:)
Santana (Almost said Santa.. I know he's not metal but GOD..)
Yngwie Fagsteen
Buckethead
Buckethead
Zakk Wylde
Randy Rhoads +982375
Kerry King
Herman Li

I know I can think of more..

Dude you're being a bit too harsh there. So now every popular guitarrist is overrated? Buckethead is fucking great both riffwise and solowise, maybe the perfect balance between pure-shredding and nice riff-writing. Santana, yeah overrated cause most of his fans can't tell a Cmin from a Cmaj and praise that cause he puts a very emotional face when playing three notes in 3 minutes he's a god and nobody can play like him. But he does write excellent music that deserves all the praise he gets IMO. Much more on that list, to me are excellent musicians correctly rated by majority

Dimebag (Sorry, but he died a few years ago, and really wasn't as great as people put on. Let it fucking go.)

Dude, I absolutely disagree in this point. I think, he was great technically and had much feeling in his playing. I just remember the "planet caravan" ending solo. He was one of the gods imo!

John Petrucci
Slash
Michael Amott

I cannot agree. They stand rightfully there, where they are. Nobody sounds like Slash! John Petrucci is one of the technically best of the world (he can also show some feeling, If he want to ;)) and fucking hands down for Michael Amott!! The only reason I listen to Arch Enemy´s "rise of the tyrant" is the unbelievable solos/arrangements.

Hopefully.

I don't wanna talk about guitar players that suck. For the very reason we are arguing. No one can agree, we only get arguments, aside from maybe Kirk Hammet.:puke:

Kirk Hammet's a given at any one single point in time though

I've taken shits that were better guitar players.

But yeah the subject matter is purely opinionated.

how the FUCK can ANYONE seriously say Randy Rhoads was over-rated fuck's sake??? sure there's a million little youtube wankers that can easily play his solos in this era of every third 14 year old being able to shred 16th-note triplet arpeggios at 180bpm without blinking (and usually quite mechanically and lifelessly i might add)... but Rhoads was playing and earning his stripes in the late 70's to 1982... CONTEXT PEOPLE.. it's all about historical context and feel... and despite that some of you can easily play those solos now and the fact that there are loads of great guitarists now compared to then, the composition, phrasing, and touch he delivered with his solos nearly 30 years ago still stands up today.

sorry... anyone who says Rhoads was overrated is an ignorant fool, and should put down their guitar immediately in shame. you don't deserve to play it.

good day.

i said GOOD DAY!
