Most Overrated Metal Guitarists?

Pretty much any rock/metal guitarist my age and older (30s and up) went through some sort of Rhoads phase. When you look at it, his style was a really cool combination of the Schenker/Roth approach (with a more rigorous classical underpinning) set in well-written songs that were pretty heavy in their day. A lot of what we consider about guitarists and solos reflects back on the songs that this playing is set in.

Another thing that I like to remind people when talking about guys from before at least the mid-80s is that most shreddy guys from today would sound like shit through an old cranked Marshall with no boost.

how the FUCK can ANYONE seriously say Randy Rhoads was over-rated fuck's sake??? sure there's a million little youtube wankers that can easily play his solos in this era of every third 14 year old being able to shred 16th-note triplet arpeggios at 180bpm without blinking (and usually quite mechanically and lifelessly i might add)... but Rhoads was playing and earning his stripes in the late 70's to 1982... CONTEXT PEOPLE.. it's all about historical context and feel... and despite that some of you can easily play those solos now and the fact that there are loads of great guitarists now compared to then, the composition, phrasing, and touch he delivered with his solos nearly 30 years ago still stands up today.

sorry... anyone who says Rhoads was overrated is an ignorant fool, and should put down their guitar immediately in shame. you don't deserve to play it.

good day.

i said GOOD DAY!

very true....same for Hendrix

very true....same for Hendrix

how is this good in any form of musical technicality?

it just pisses me off to know people like this fucking retard got praised for reasons in which he didn't deserve it.

some might say "oh! he has feeling! blah blah!"

he was also on acid and played like shit.

I like Tipton, but Lynch struggles to play his own stuff.
You ever check out an instructional video of him....there's some on youtube. fail. No wonder him and Don Dokken couldn't get along.....Lynch was probably always looking over his shoulder.

Most overated.....hmmm, how about someone who's drummer writes all his riffs.

Well I've never seen any of his instructional videos, and I don't know (or really care) who wrote the riffs (if that's what you're saying about Lynch), but man alive, the solos of "Into the Fire" and "In my Dreams", GODDAMN

Unless I'm missing something, you're +1ing James Murphy for his view that Rhoads is an immensely influential guitarist... after you'd previously said how overrated he was?!

This also confused me a bit :loco: Shreddymarz, what´s the matter? Think about your reputation. No one will do some projects with ya, if you act like this. I know, you are young, but come on...you said.."I wish I personally could have shot down his helicopter myself!"

Why the hatred?

Each one here have great respect for your awesome guitar skills, I´m sure. Don´t act like this..do not put stones in your way! Show some respect.

Not talking about Lynch on that....lol.
YOur right though.....Lynch does sound good an the albums.
The Lynch, Kotzen, Gilbert jam was miserable though.

Alright man, I'll stop with the thread.
I just love a good intelligible argument!
Some might argue (ironically) what I've said isn't intelligent at all, and probably isn't, but it's my opinion, and as long as I am living.. No little fuckhat is ever going to tell me my opinion is wrong. I'll leave it at that, and head out to Guitar Center to buy a TS7 :p

Cheers

I think you didn't understand what James said....it's always easier to play something looking back on it after 30 years....but to start something innovativ is a whole different thing.
he is known (and highly rated) today because he was the first person using a guitar in that way.....
at that time that's much more interesting and innovative than being the 2.000.000.000 playinf an a-minor arp-sweep on youtube (just repeating James here....because he was right).

I think you're giving weedsmokers a bad reputation because you seem to be the typical arrogant, ignorant knowitall kinda guy that doesn't really have any experience to show as a foundation for his arguments.
Sorry I gotta be that harsh, but I really feel that there are VERY many people here on the forum with much more experience and knowledge than you that would just agree about you talking shit here :(

your post just shows that you understand fuck all about it.

thatr's like saing..."terminator2 (or Start Wars) was shit because the special FX are bollocks...the matrix is much better....see how fake chewbacca looks, you can totally see that it's a guy wearing a costume".
fuck that, it's still a classic and put in the matching time it was a fucking milestone.

and other than most of todays special FX based movies you can still watch it because it's a good movie...and not only because it's featuring the latest special FX.....same with Hendrix, Rhoads, Van HAlen etc

Also, the general publics mindset is to praise anything that sounds simple and catchy to the ear

No matter how shitty the song is or how poorly written it is.

Look at Nickelback.

nor how great the song is or how nicely written it is. Your opinions are so above us sheer mortals who happen to like things more than 2 people also like. we suck. kill us with your retardkiller killswitch

That was not offensive, dude. And when you say, all is SATIRE or FUN, then all is pretty cool :) DAMN..I´m a fan of your playing!! But show some respect to our dead Metalheads. Nothing more I wanna say!

You can do what you want, man..but take it as a tip.

You talkin' bout Scott Ian/Anthrax? He once said that Charlie Benante is the by-far better guitarist and writes a lot of the Anthrax riffs ... :)

That's what I thought, too.

Concerning ShreddyMarz:

I'd almost been inclined to write: "Hey, let's have that discussion again in 30 years, when there's another generation of wannabe-elitist shredders who are tearing YOUR stuff apart like there's no tomorrow."

But then I realized... That won't happen! Why? Because nobody will ever give a shit about your playing because what you're doing is as unique, groundbreaking, influential and relevant as yesterdays newspaper.

People like Jimi, EVH, Randy etc. on the other hand will be remembered to the day the collapsing sun will swallow us. Because their playing was exactly all of the above.

To tell you the truth I didn't really understand why people praised Hendrix so much myself when I was in my teens. I was too busy looking up to Slash, Kirk, Marty, Nuno etc
Of course later on I completely understood what the hype was about. As you mature and look at things for what they are or were and not what you would like them to be you start to appreciate things a lot more. (It's also how you can enjoy many more musical styles without being afraid to be called a fag) As has been pointed out before, it's really all about context. (time, setting, impact/influence, innovation etc)
I still get really mad that so many bands can rip off ATG and get huge and not show some respect or recognition. At least Darkest Hour were nice enough to bring them out on tour but they don't nearly get the recognition they deserve.
I'm sure ShreddyMarz will come to that realization soon enough. How old are you btw?
