the entropy league is a great podcast, metal injection radio rules. made me discover arsis!

Yeah, Jim is a huge Arsis fan. I like that he plays all metal genres. I look forward to TEL every week.

look...this is what it boils down to for me...since you indeed brought my name up several times in the thread itself.

It may SEEM like i just slag on bands that i just simply dont like for no reason. but it REALLY isnt that simple. I really only have ONE main criteria when judging a band, and thats "DO THEY DO SOMETHING NEW OR INTERESTING!?" if they dont...theyre probably like orphaned land or symphony X, where they have quite a bit of talent, but i couldnt find the time in the day to try and listen to something i can hear elsewhere better or something more interesting all together instead. If they DONT do something new...then i can examine if they do something extremely well that appeals to my tastes in general. This is where my personal biases will come in, however i still stand by them, because i feel my taste is extremely broad and refined. Thats how i can listen to some great bands which do what they do extremely well, without the band having to be 100% original. Even NFU needs some variety afterall....

Anyway, if you need to dissect so many parts like musicianship, atmosphere, "prog" influences as so many of you think you understand what that even means, and lyrics, yada yada...then in my opinion youre trying too hard with the few options youre giving yourself. Theres FAR too many bands/artists out there who are amazing and unique within the first 30 seconds that you shouldnt have to pick them apart at all to know youre listening to something special. A very small grouping of these kind of bands can be found in the "NFU RECOMMEND SOME MUSIC" thread. Its not some secret...im not better at this than anyone else...i just spend my time wisely. Ive been researching bands, listening to demos, collecting records, and taken an active part in several music scenes for a while now...the information is at your fingertips...just dont be lazy. If ONLY the internet had been as vast in its array of information 7 years ago for me as it is now, so you really have no excuses people.

and for what its worth (and if i can bring myself to care more depending on the band), ill try to be a little more expressive and thorough with my own reviews and thoughts on the bands i comment on...if its more helpful that way. Youll just have to excuse (or deal with) my opinions on bands like say...orphaned land who i just have no tolerance for considering i STILL cannot figure out why anyone would want to sit and listen to that in the first place. Here will be my personal grading chart...

5 - Fantastic...go buy!
4 - Decent...look into.
3 - Just ok...must love this style.
2 - Not enough time in the day...stop.
1 - Awful...delete or throw out now!

i don't understand how you can equate Orphaned Land with not new or interesting. they are pretty much the leading band for israeli metal, and one of the few i can think of who use oriental music + metal in a way that sounds good. if this isn't new to you, then pray tell, who has mastered this style more than they? if, perhaps, you just don't like it, then you can politely fuck off because your bashing is completely biased without even *attempting* to be objective

sigh's worst day > orphaned land's best day

look ken, im not going to say that orphaned land is good just because you have a liking to anything completely oversaturated and melodic that could be equated to the completely watered down defenition of progressive or melodeath metal. the bands youve cited as great in the past prove that your standards of critique are a bit skewed to that direction in the least. im not being arbitrary...orphaned land really is just overrated.

overrated by who? nobody outside this forum and a few other places outside of israel has even heard they exist. if anything they are underrated.

Sigh eh? I shall check them out.

Thanks, NFU. I appreciate you taking the time. I'll keep your grading chart in mind! I'm a fan when you speak up. You've steered me to some good music.

You know, I look at this thread and where it's gone and I wonder if I know what I want. I mean my idea sounds sort of wanky if you look at it a certain way. Part of that's a result of my years teaching, when I'd have to evaluate things that are not normally quantifiable. I'd work with my students and create a rubric. It made things a lot easier. What did "adequate participation" mean? The rubric explained it, and you circled the box that best described what happened. I guess I was thinking of this rating system along the lines of a rubric.

The other part of me, the Music & Technology major, is very interested in ways that technology can make discovering new music and exploring your own music library more exciting and fruitful. After all, life is way too short to spend it listening to crappy music. In some ways, I'd prefer an AI listen to the music and learn about different musical traits, have it learn your tastes, make recommendations. It would just have to take a high number of traits into account to be worth anything.

Just an idea.

I'll have to check out that winamp thing. I use iTunes, so I'm not familiar with it.

I wish I was still in college doing my music & tech degree, cuz this idea is waaaay better than the composition for artificially intelligent computer performer and clarinet was! Ugh... And this has a better market than the AICP, I think.
