Dimmu - anything left?

There seems to be three opinions on Dimmu:

1. They rule (not held by any on this board)
2. One of their early CDs was the shitz, every else has sucked ass
3. They've always sucked

Regardless of which of these opinions you hold, I find them to be occasionally creative, and they seem to have a good sense for songwriting (though more so on PEM than DCA). So, my question to the board is this; are they done? Is a quality disc something they just don't have in them? Have they sold their souls to.... Sata... ehh, Sony?

Spiritual Black Dimensions is a solid album but I don't like heavy/black . EDT is so-so , half of it is quite good , the other half is pointless for me.. PEM & DCA .. eh... I'm not a Stormblast expert...

I think they get more flak then they deserve. I enjoyed their last two albums, albeit not to the nth degree or anything. They certainly evolved into a more accessible sound. Many consider For All Tid and Stormblast to be the only works of value from the band (pretty much a similar opinion of those who feel the same about Satyricon's The Shadowthrone, Dark Medieval Times and Nemesis Divina) but there's plenty of quality to be found throughout their catalogue.

I actually belong to the first group of people you mentioned there, Zod, at least more so than the two other groups. I really, really dig Stormblåst and Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia, and I also enjoy For All Tid, Godless Savage Garden and Death Cult Armageddon. Enthrone Darkness Triumphant and Spiritual Black Dimensions have their moments, but they're not GREAT records, methinks.

I guess I'm a nr. 2, then. I'm sure there are many redeeming values to their newer albums, but for me, it's just all too polished and "soulless". I know that's an expression generally frowned upon around here, but that's how I see it.

As for the original question, I think they'll continue to make albums for as long as there's profit in it for them.

enthrone darkness triumphant is some pretty cool shit, although i don't really listen to it anymore. the first four songs are totally smokin, the rest is perfectly okay. haven't heard their real early stuff, what i heard of the late stuff was poop.

I like them quite a bit. I don't really care for anything before Enthrone Darkness Triumphant, tho. Shitty production, and boring "song" structures.

Bringing Vortex and Barker on board was one of the best things they could've done... too bad barker is AWOL.

So are they Sony? I hadn't heard that...

Bringing Astennu on board was the best thing they could've done, at least from a financial standpoint. And he made them more famous than they could have been without him. He was playing what Dimmu would become, years before with Lord Kaos, but got absolutely no recognition for it because he was Aussie.

You're extremely correct, Erik. Stormblast is one of my all time favorite albums (and for the record, it has a FLAWLESS drum performance) and I might even consider it 10/10 material. For All Tid is indeed cool, but the range of quality on that album is surprisingly uneven. You'll encounter a song that is total crap, but the next one will be fucking fantastic!

So anyway... if you're interested, get Stormblast.
