Discussion on upcoming 'Other' thread for GMD Votes series

if rush counts then loads of heavy psych and proto-metal 'n shit should totally count

i think celtic frost should count if only because i think they get short shrift for being eligible for too many categories

How are you going to measure the percentage of metal of an album? Are there any objective criteria?

Listen to the album with a stop-watch and stop every time the metal stops and start every time the metal begins. At the end divide the length on the stop watch by the total length of the album. It the number is .5 or greater, the album qualifies.

A few that would go on a list:

Xtort - KMFDM
Nihil - KMFDM
The Land of Rape and Honey - Ministry
The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste - Ministry
Streetcleaner - Godflesh
Demanufacture - Fear Factory
The Perfect Cult - Deathstars
Broken - Nine Inch Nails (don't hate)

Only one I'm really iffy about in regards to "being metal" is Xtort.

What? KMFDM and Ministry are firmly within metal (although I'll agree that Xtort may be pushing it). You could argue that most NIN albums aren't metal, but Broken isn't one of those albums.

Psalm 69 and others are certainly metal, but tbf I wouldn't call The Land of Rape and Honey metal either.

The Land of Rape and Honey is seen by almost everybody as the original industrial metal album. At the very least, I'd say it's metal-ish (and important) enough to count, especially if we're counting Rush as metal.

Which criteria determine when metal begins and when it stops? I'm aware that there's a device called "metal detector", but I'm afraid it won't work in this context.;)

Never got an answer about Bathory's Hammerheart. Is it elligable for this list? Also, what about Rage Against the Machine? It's metal in my eyes, even though it's not on Metal Archives.

Well then Krow needs to restate what he means. If any band on MA is eligible, then you include Rush, DP and Alice in Chains.

I wouldn't allow any of those so I'm just arguing over semantics at this point.

RATM doesn't count to me. That Bathory album being included is up to debate for you all. I personally think that shouldve gone in the black metal thread but Bathory does cross genres tons of times..

I hope the only reason you're saying DP wouldnt be "allowed" in this list is because they were already included in one if the other lists.
