do u think mike can shred but doesn't show it on record

Opeth's music doesn't call for shredding, so the question is a bit redundant. Adding that element into the songs would really lower the musicality of them. One of the main things I like about Opeth is that they stay away from the standard style of "showing off just because you can". There is no doubt that they could, however, do so if they chose.

I reckon he can shred. The guitar solo on the Sorskogen song is pretty good. Quite fast and tasteful. I imagine he could shred scales flat out and be a shredder in that sense. The key to going from a great guitar player to being known as a shredder is to play those flat out arpeggios (like my guitar teacher can). if you throw them in it adds a whole new dimension to soloing because you are travelling from point a to point b on the fretboard much faster. It's sounds like shifting ionto the next gear.

But I agree that the music doesn't really call for it. Maybe on the steel project he will shred becasue thats more like the forum for it.

Cheers

Its a 2 bladed sword cause a lot of guitar players ( cause they areny guitarist ) hide behind the "its not how fast its all about the songs" because they are very mediocre and they choose not to improve and their compositions suffer, after all there is a degree of technical requirements to compose music and feel free and confident when playing it. I agree most of the time about it but it its abused, when people screams at shred guitar players for no apparent reason they dont value composing, 90% of the time they are just jealous.

True! And a good example about shredding going too far and damaging the music is Children of Bodom. Sure he can play, but if that is all he can do...

I'm more fond to different techniques than shredding. Like playing acoustic guitar with fingers, tremolo etc. And with electric guitar, wicked rhythms and moody melodies. Those are the things I give a value.

Music is all about emotions.

Well said my friend...well said.

I think that Opeth should stay how they are, if Mike started shredding, it would make them like a whole load of other bands, which would SUCK!!! Opeth are ORIGINAL, they should stay that way, no matter what.
The world is running out of original bands, I can tell you that for a fact.

To you... maybe.

But i am not you.

It is, by definition, art; wich is by definition expression. If you express something chances are its gonna be emotions most or all the time otherwise it wouldnt be expression wouldnt it? Music could be about expressing ideas but its just not as appealing because you dont need sound to express ideas, this is why forms of music like hardcore or punk ( punk in its supposedly purest form ) fail miserably, a hardcore kid would be better off writing a book and making an association than making a band and making a scene.
