well, in a sense, lyrics are what makes a good song, but good music makes the song even better. i know i'm going to get flamed for this, but i really hate cannibal corpse, not just because of their really stupid and "i'm a 13 year old and i want the goriest" lyrics, but because i just can't like their riffs. and i happen to like the international noise conspiracy, cuz their lyrics actually mean something...but poetic lyrics from opeth etc, are really good, they change the mood of the song really well

it depends. if the music is superb like bodom then lyrics don't really matter. lyrics also don't matter if you can't understand what they are saying, but i do admit when i read the lyrics to stuff that i can't understand and the lyrics suck i am very dissapointed and i have a whole differtn view on teh song. i hate juvenile lyrics.

Someone pretty much said my opinion : Good music doesn't need to have good lyrics, but if it has em' it's ofcourse better.

hey, I'm french and don't understand 90% of the lyrics of the music I listen to (moreover when the lyrics are screamed), of course I can read the booklet etc etc, but most of time this is american argotic, so even if I do my best, I still don't understand 90% of it...
About french music, well, first there's not a lot of good french music. (I don't know why, I just feel like english sounds better than french, for singing particularly, or maybe it's because I don't understand the stupid lyrics !), and if lyrics are not good, they at least can be funny... Well, at least one half second... So personnaly I don't care about lyrics, as long as it's not racist or anything like that.

hell yes, they're important!

I wouldn't listen to CoB if they were singing about flowers and ponies. It's the combination of interesting lyrics and shreddingly awesome music that makes CoB stand out for me.

The themes ALexi sings about are great...death, murder...and not giving a fuck. It makes the songs that much more enjoyable.

Depends on the band. For the type of musical concept CoB is executing, they don't need poetry, just something that sounds energetic when you scream it. For Katatonia on the other hand, every word is important.

I voted no, but it really depends on the type of music I guess.

That said, in general I rarely take notice of lyrics, at least in extreme metal as you can rarely hear them.

Lyrics only take on purpose with me if they are for:

- Pop songs...catchy lyrics and vocal hooks can make a great pop song
- Catchy songs, irrespetive of musical genre - if I wanna sing along I don't wanna sound a right twat in the process by going "hum dum de dum".
- Comedy/parody songs...otherwise there is rarely a point, unless the parody is soley on a musical level, which is rare.

Also, somebody mentioned juvenile lyrics, and I guess REALLY terrible lyrics, if audible, say like Limp Bizkit with all their immaturity and banality can actually ruin or put me off a song.

I believe that lyrics are very important for a song 'cause it (the song) was writed to give a message, tell a story or something. Like poetry. But music is such important and must fit with the lyrics. Per exaple if a song's about death and sorrow it will be slow and dipresive on the other hand if it's about violence (see Cannibal Corpse and numerus others) the music soul be as violent as well. Of course I don't hear Cannibal Corpse for their lyrics and so Runnig Wild for their music. But I think that a compination of well-writed lyrics and good music is the best for a song.
