The studio I work on has a 2009 model with 8 cores. I managed once to run it out of gas, but then I froze a lot of tracks and everything calmed down. But otherwise, it is plenty of power for any user.

Dude I'm telling you man it all depends. I always say that, how liberally will you be using the internet? I've been a mac user since 2006 and I'll never switch over because I use it not only for mixing, but for facebook, ripping media (typically Payperviews), watching anal sex, and downloading random shit that I don't even know what it. But the way I see it is if you're using your computer completely for mixing, I say go PC. I mean you save a ton of money going that direction. But at the same time, I haven' used a PC since 2006 so I don't know how reliable the OS is nowadays, although I heard Windows 7 is light years ahead of what Vista was.

Edit: I forgot to mension, going PC will not only save money now, but it will save money long term. You can upgrade them much more than you can macs if you build your own. I'm telling you man, If Apple would let us build our own mac's, it would dominate and end this PC vs Mac debate

But Apples OS is enough for me to go with a mac

Well in any case, I'm purchasing a desktop pretty soon that I will be using to set up my first legitimate DAW.
I will probably end up upgrading a bit. And, Windows 7 is pretty nice. Much better than Vista, though it seems like XP still uses less of the processor than 7.

But, when I start getting really serious about producing, and by that I mean actually recording other bands for payment instead of just doing fun mixes and my own band's stuff, I'm going to want to go with a full out mac pro.

I won't even need to open up the anal porn to get off. All I have to do is look at the glossy screen in its highest resolution. I'll bust everywhere. And then have to clean it up quickly to avoid permanent damage.

8-core here as well. Yes, in MY experience Mac > PC. When you pay for it though, don't forget that in a few years, your resale price will be much much higher than that of a PC, so it's really not that bad of an investment.

The cool thing about the quad core that I have (2x 2.66ghz dual core processors) is you can easily swap them out for 2 quad core processors and upgrade to an 8 core machine.

I wouldn't call a mac and investment at all. I got my macbook 4 years ago for $1500 and now I can't sell it for more than $300. Technology gets better and better by the minute and it's way harder to upgrade macs than PC's

Right, that's not what I'm saying. It's the fact that in 4 years the value of my macbook went from $1500 or $300. So if the macpro went down that rate, a $5000 macpro would be worth $1000 in 4 years. That's all I'm saying

Edit: I'm looking at ebay right now. I can see macpros going for 1 grand. It doesn't say what year they were purchased but looking at the specs it looks like they are around 4 years old, just as I stated

2x2Ghz Dual PPC....like 6 years old or so...still going strong, I'm doing all my work with it. (only BIG problem is the sogtware support or PPC of course).
I'm not gonna upgrade anytime soon.

bear in min that Andy did DHIADW and all the old classics on a G4...and apparently that had enough horsepower for such an über awesome sound....

you think if it was a PC laptop, you could update every part without limits? you're dreamin bro... if it was a desktop it'd be a different story

It's way easier to upgrade a PC laptop than it is a macbook, no argument about that. With a macbook you can pretty much only upgrade ram. I don't even know if you can send it in to have them upgrade it. You can do a lot more with a PC laptop. My sister actually studies computer engineering and she builds laptops part time, she can pick those suckers apart and put in new shit with very few limits

And of course the macbook I have isn't good for audio work. But I didn't get into any kind of audio production until last summer.
